i love the contrast: gracious rock style.

I love the glove/jacket combo.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:52 AM) :

I love how she toughens up the lace with the jacket and boots. BUT, I am not loving this look. It's a bit costumey, isn't it?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:05 AM) :

Her second name must be "Saturation".

Blogger whyioughtta said ... (8:24 AM) :

Want. Dress.

And gloves.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:25 AM) :

Love the look but just not the hat, well at least I hope its a hat.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:45 AM) :

the sartorialist! when is the dries van noten show? i cant wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Blogger Alice Olive said ... (9:16 AM) :

The delicacy of the dress and gloves and netting of her hat against the jacket and boots is a unique combination. And her make up looks pretty impeccable. She reminds me of a delicate version of Dita Von Teese - no drama/ostentation.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:36 AM) :

The gloves are unexpected -- a quirky yet elegant touch.

I love everything about this look! The quirky mix of biker, baby doll and proper socialite. Its a lovely example of true personal style. And what a beautiful setting!

I like the leather jacket...Very "Ramones".

Dominatrix dons doily with decadence.

Delightful.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:31 PM) :

she's adorable! motorcycle jacket and lace... totally sporting the post-millennial maddona chic.

Blogger Big Eyes Strange Names said ... (12:32 PM) :

Salty and sweet all at the same time. 3/4 length on a leather jacket: rare and awesome.

Blogger knitlit kate said ... (12:45 PM) :

i am so dusting off the motorcycle jacket that's been hanging in my closet since 1987.

Blogger The Vintagent said ... (12:59 PM) :

Ooh la la, un Femme Material.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:03 PM) :

Oh wow, I think this might be one of my favorite shots. The delicate white dress under a hard-edged leather jacket is fantastic. I love that combination. Not to mention the fabulous hat with a veil, long white gloves, and red lipstick. This is a perfect outfit.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:06 PM) :

What tremendous individual style!!! I love the way the Schott Perfecto-style jacket works with the white dress, gloves, and lace to create an angelic rockablilly look. If I could only choose my guardian angel...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:37 PM) :

love!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:06 PM) :

I like this only if she is an eccentric bride--fabulous. If not, it's just too much of a costume.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:13 PM) :

she looks like a doily

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:43 PM) :

this woman is so John Galliano! Not a surprise, that she was going to Diors show :D

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:47 PM) :

love the look! but I like so much the gloves and hat...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:13 PM) :

she screams dior to me. makes sence why she is there.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:17 PM) :

Too costumey. Would only work if she was an angst-ridden 16-year-old.

Blogger laia. said ... (4:46 PM) :

oh man, I absolutely LOVE this lady. Nothing warms my heart quite like a masculine/feminine, soft/hard contrast and she carries it out to perfection to the last detail. The gloves are great!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:44 PM) :

Hate the look, it seems too planned. It's missing that crucial sense of spontaneity.

Dominatrix Minnie Mouse!

So pretty!

Blogger Janets Planet said ... (10:21 AM) :

No to the hat or whatever that thing is. Everything else, YES!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:02 AM) :

Like a younger Isabella Blow.

Blogger Jenny said ... (4:49 PM) :

i think this, not skinny jeans and converse, is what real rock and roll style looks like.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:27 PM) :

Is she? wearing a hat?

Blogger Unknown said ... (12:37 PM) :

Is that Isabella Blow? Cos I really like her. Specially the hats she's always carrying. Or is it another version of hers?

Please let me know, ok?!

Abbracci,

Eduardo - Brasil (with S please)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:13 PM) :

This would have been sheer perfection had she stopped at the hat. Something about that topper just puts it over the edge for me.

ARG!!! How can so many comments be positive? How on earth can this uncomfortable, ridiculous combination be acceptable?!?

Take an important note people: most of you are being convinced, by Mr. Sartorialist, by this blog, and by other commenters, that this is proper and intelligent attire.
Snap out of it! I've agreed with a few things on this blog, but you've got to know where to draw the line and say it's just plain wrong, silly, and completely unacceptable to wear in public!

So next time, before you comment on anything, take some time and ask yourself if you could actually wear whatever is proposed.

Blogger The Sartorialist said ... (11:36 PM) :

to Anon 8:29pm
wow
you are really missing the entire idea of this whole blog

I'm not proposing that you go out and wear any of these outfits but i am showing you a bit of the rich variety of how people dress.

take whatever inspiration you can get from these photos, if you find no inspiration then simply move on with no harm done.

Blogger Unknown said ... (1:51 AM) :

Would NEVER wear this together. Although I would wear the dress...I need that dress in my life...Anyone can help me out, please? thank you kindly...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:09 AM) :

To anonymous 8:29pm.

I agree with Sart that you seem to be missing the point of this blog, which simply presents an array of people in an array of styles (some of which you'll like-I mean the communal "you" here-and some of which you won't). I mean, any form of personal or artistic expression is always going to have champions and naysayers, as it should.

But rarely does Sart even comment on the pictures he posts, so to suggest that he's trying to sway personal opinion and that everyone who reads the blog and comments favorably on an outfit you personally dislike is falling into some kind of fashionista lockstep march, is just silly. I think it may appear that way because most Sartorialist readers tend to comment on things they like and opt to not comment on looks they don't like (out of consideration for the person pictured) but I think you're off the mark here.

And of all the countless photos posted on this blog - which include many many more outrageous outfits than this one - I fail to see why this photo would cause any ire. The girl is wearing a pretty dress under a cropped motorcycle jacket with boots and gloves. Fairly standard stuff in most women's wardrobes. I agree the veiled hat is overkill, but to call the entire look "just plain wrong, silly, and completely unacceptable to wear in public" seems a bit odd, given the rather classic nature of the garments in question.

(Sart, you owe me ten bucks. And what's the secret handshake, again? I keep forgetting...)

way too obvious.

Blogger andrea said ... (2:26 PM) :

Luckily there are people who celebrate a silly hat balancing above a pretty face as a sign of the happy, playful mind of a happy playful person.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:02 PM) :

I like the dress in the particular. WIth the jacket.....it reminds me of the DIY teenage 80's movies.

Blogger Dianne said ... (5:13 AM) :

Dress, bag, boots are all great. Jacket too small, gloves just wrong and article resembling a saucer on her head tips the entire look into pantomime. But hey-maybe she just wants to be noticed!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:06 AM) :

I love the dress.

I wish she were my mom so I could steal her clothes.

Blogger moosj said ... (2:09 PM) :

tough is to tender as white eyelet is to black leather

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:44 PM) :

I love this outfit, minus the silly hat and the overbearing gloves. The lacy dress with the motorcycle jacket and slouchy boots is very nice though.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:03 AM) :

In a weird kind of way, this kind of reminds me of the late Isabella Blow- the red lips, the headgear and the general love and mix of fashion. Different textures and different looks all jumbled up into something so genius- something Isabella Blow would have done.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:53 AM) :

great dress!
