Search For A Structured Coat To Go With Jeans
When it gets cold outside I seem to always fall back on my trusty Navy nylon parka. I love this ehtcoat but it makes me feel even more round than I already am (and remember I am consistently on the lookout for additional lank). That is why I really like (and have to remember to buy) a structured, more tailored coat like this that still looks good and not to dressy with jeans. I think the reason this looks so good with jeans is the sturdy feel of the wool and the brown leather buttons - black or matching buttons would make it a bit too refined for jeans, imho.

post a commenti can see your point, and do appreciate it. whereas on the other hand, i have to say, that i prefer to mix up jeans with - as you said - refined items. i like to use jeans (or other items) to break up an overly strict look, i.e. with a redingote.

Although I think the coat is great, it is the scarf or the way the scarf was wrapped around his neck that gives the photo that extra umph!
It totally changed the silhouette of the coat making it spectacular.

the only thing that goes are coats like this one, and a trench is always a win, too! no matter how trashy and vintage you dress, a coat gives you an extra portion of class!

It looks perfect for jeans, and generally casual pants.
What you need is a peacoat. Structured but not formal, looks great with jeans.

Scott, have you considered acquiring a Covert Coat? Covert coats were originally used for hunting and country pusuits, but are now worn with suits in business setings or with casual attire such as a sweater and jeans. You can find them at establishments such as Cordings and Harvie & Hudson in London.
Warmer trench coat is another if not more elegant option. You can always count on Burberry... Fall 2006 season had some interesting slim versions.
I really like the look of a tailored knee-length daytime dress coat (the kind you'd wear to work with a suit) over a pair of jeans. Not rumpled worn out jeans, certainly, but the good pair saved for a casual evening or shopping, etc. I love the length of that kind of coat on a man and they tend to give a slim, elegant line. And after all, why not mix it up a bit -- did I not see a photo of Ralph Lauren recently in a tuxedo jacket with jeans and heavy boots, no less?

Isn't that just a double breasted duffle coat? Although, I do like the use of buttons rather than horn toggles.
That is a great coat. The wool is so thick I thought this was a shearling at first glance. And notice the pea coat style on top, but the lower it falls on the legs, making it more practical and taking away the longshoreman look so popular now.
...and I'm sure the great scarf didn't influence you one bit either...

looks too stiff, like a robot. gotta unbutton that coat. this is always going to come in second place to a peacoat.

Finally got on ! Love the coat. The shape and look gives it a real unique look. I don't recall seeing a coat like this.

The fitted coat--a good idea, but one must be careful.
For example, this gentleman's coat is a bit too snug for his body-shape--and the top pocket placement doesn't help matters.
Call me crazy, but I think you just can't beat a classic, navy p coat. For extra cool points, score a genuine, vintage WWII piece. :)
Oh, and it's worth noting that it's not "pea coat," or "peacoat;" it's "p coat" (hyphenate at your own) wherein the "p" stands for pilot! ...Damned civilians, mucking up perfectly good military jargon. *grumble, grumble*

It's the double-breasted coat. ;) And he can pull it off because he's actually tall (I think) and sort of thin to begin with.
When the weather gets cold, there's always something undoubtedly attractive about a man in a nice, structured coat.
One thing I envy about men's fashion is the way the upper body can be buttoned up, enfolded in layers that lie smooth and flat. I like the contrast between jacket and scarf here.

I love this silhouette...he resembles a London chimney (in the best of ways).
I think that with the "funnel neck" effect (scarf or collar, I can't tell which), you could even go with a shorter coat and look like a nice, lean chimney.

Please keep up this search, and publish your results. I just moved to NYC from a warmer climate and I'm terrified of the upcoming winter.
The coat just doesn't fit. The problem is it's too tight, and the cut is wrong; coat makers are cheapskates, and cut most coats straight from under the arms, to economise on fabric; whereas what looks good is for it to go in at the waist (even slightly), then flare out to the hem. A really good straight coat will have a slight flare, but I love the huge coats with big skirts that swirl around the wearer, male or female!
Interesting silhouette...still,I would love to see a little nip at the waist for an *hourglass* effect.
i just picked up this paul smith coat http://www.eluxury.com/estore/browse/product_detail.jsp?id=11459925 and it looks great with jeans. it's a little nipped in around the waist so it keeps ay lookin thin. might not be as long as you were looking for.
the problem with coats like this is that it's impossible to make those bumps go away! he still looks a little bit like the michelin man :( especially because the fabric looks wobbly where the buttons are. maybe i'm just mad picky, or maybe it's cos i'm in a market for a p-coat....
I think the coat is elegant and quite flattering for the gentleman, it really suits him well.
The coat isn't really that special. It's the combination of the way he is wearing his scarf with the coat that makes this picture a very cooool and fashionably picture.
The scarf totally ads to the structure of the coat, otherwise this would be an agghhhh outfit.
Laguna Beach Trad hit it on the head. Covert sans velvet collar with Rail Road stiching on the cuffs and hem. Check out Tommy and Turkish in the movie Snatch for the look. I think Suede paddock boots rounds out the look with jeans.
the "scarf' is actually a hooded collar from ysl f/w, hence the structure and the effect of it being wrapped around his neck
the coat is a old Dolce mixed with a Yves St Laurent neck muff ( its not a scarf) Club Monaco sells on in its womens line, but who cares. I think he looks nice, however - I would prefer he didn't button it all the way up - it would make the scarf look more cozy if he wore the lapels down.

It's very very nic, but it could be better. Anyway, I agree that coats are the only way to survive winter without looking like a penguin with overweight ;)

The structured is the guy (perhaps too much) not the coat that seems uncomfortable to wear: "le pont du tête" is too tight (better a larger size). The silhoutte is a kind of barrel. The only problem to bear a denim trouser in winter or autumn is the cotton, too cold in cold countries, not the coat...If not bear underneath, as it seems, the pyjamas. Indeed, the scarf is not an origami masterpiece made by he: It's a neck muff.
Anyway this coat has a wonderful thing: the moment of take out it and to breath, finally!.
This cost is great love the style and the scarf give the kick to the overall pic!!!
