Everything about this picture is stunning. The colour is insane.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:23 AM) :

love the pants and the shoes

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:36 AM) :

it's blushing pink! Do you take this picture in the afternoon, is it indoor or outdoor? I'm curious.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:37 AM) :

Just wow. The location kind of reminds me of a mini golf place, but it also looks like she might be on another planet or something. Haha.

Excellent photograph, excellent pants and shoes.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:55 AM) :

dusky dreamy lovely rosey illuminated & nostalgic

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:03 AM) :

the jacket, the shoes, the belt, the pants stunning i have got to visit france oh and sart some pics of mens fashion in france please

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:19 AM) :

those shoes!

i agree, the colors are insane.

love it.

Blogger underneath said ... (5:54 AM) :

A great composition - there is something very Miami Vice to the rolled up sleeves in what i presume is a linen jacket?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:58 AM) :

I love her shoes! :)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:39 AM) :

unreal

Blogger The Year in Pictures said ... (6:40 AM) :

Another amazing photograph with an incredible mix of light. How the subject remains lit while the light is clearly fading and without the use of flash is a mystery, but that's what makes Sart such a master photographer.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:00 AM) :

this really is a beautiful shot, looks like a still out of a movie. it's amost hyponotic!
this outfit is great, and rather than being eclipsed by its surroundings, is merely complimented.
the belt is a tad long however.
when's that makeover going to happen? i can't wait to see the outcome. is it still going ahead?
keep up the great work

Blogger Jana said ... (7:24 AM) :

Love those trousers..

Blogger FOTOGRAF STINE MARIE said ... (7:31 AM) :

Wow!Youre photos are really great. Im very inspired. Love the pictures you have taken of people on the street.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:51 AM) :

I like the use of layering here. The middle layer of an unbuttoned dress shirt with rolled up sleeves makes the outfit more interesting.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:51 AM) :

Anything, anyone in that setting would be knocked out. Great image ... the girl, well ... whatever.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:13 AM) :

Slight Don Johnson look going on here. Love the pants

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:20 AM) :

I'm totally crazy about this out fit and the girl is lovely.
Cheers Ji Pé

Blogger Alysa said ... (8:34 AM) :

The depth, lines and colours of this photo are stunning.

Blogger whats-he-wearing.com said ... (8:51 AM) :

this is beautiful! the colors, and the path! and the blurred lights on the background...

very nice pic

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:51 AM) :

The background is out of this world beautiful

Blogger vio said ... (9:17 AM) :

omg WONDERFUL!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:36 AM) :

perfection

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:59 AM) :

Really?

She's slim and lovely, but the proportions and pleats on those pants are really unflattering.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:00 AM) :

I am in love with this photograph. Inspiring outfit as well! Cheers!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:02 AM) :

The pictures is amazing - loving the colours.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:03 AM) :

You can tell that is not the USA because that crooked path is a lawsuit waiting to happen. Imagine her trying to navigate that in those big heels after a few cocktails! Awesome photo.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:20 AM) :

how fun!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:21 AM) :

Is anyone out there like me and not really excited to have the eighties return?

Blogger Char Ruiz Manjarrez said ... (10:34 AM) :

This picture is simply gorgeous. It really captures the essence of the sounth of France.

Blogger Lady Lala said ... (10:35 AM) :

i don´t like this look, only the shoes and the photograph

Blogger L C said ... (10:40 AM) :

I love it. Something about the outfit and the backdrop makes me think I'm looking into a carnival/circus circa 1920s. So dream-like.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:52 AM) :

I don't even care about the outfit...as a photograph this is absolutely incredible. The woman somehow stands out and blends in all at the same time. wow...just wow.

Blogger MARIA H said ... (11:01 AM) :

trendy, yet not fun...
Each piece is charming...but together they don't do much.
It seems very formulaic, falling into disproportion just by keeping up with cool. The pants look big. and the colors weak.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:05 AM) :

While I think the background is amazing, I think the outfit ruined the picture. I'm sorry, but those pants no matter how fashionable they may be they are hideous and do nothing for her. It has potential of being a great outfit but some parts need a little help.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:06 AM) :

Again, I know that we are supposed to be talking about clothes here. But, this message is for you Scott. What a piece of art this is. Amazing light, color! Is that the ocean back there? Truly beautiful. I love that time of day when the world becomes blue. Blue in the best possible way! I love it!

Blogger Paolo Manaloto said ... (11:26 AM) :

wow the colors just play out wonderfully! like her outfit full of personality.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:42 AM) :

just amazing colors and the lights and the clothing. wow. awesome background!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:05 PM) :

i don't know... something is "off" about this look, and to me it seems like she's trying a bit too hard because i notice the clothes first, and not her as a whole. maybe it's the belt? not sure... and i love pleated pants and jackets with rolled-up sleeves. contrast this look with that woman wearing the cropped pleated pants and high heels a little while back (i think it was taken in milan, and there was a guy checking her out in the background). in that picture, i noticed the woman first. here, my eye goes right to that belt... and i'm not totally loving the shoes, either. but the location is fantastic!

Blogger Paul said ... (12:12 PM) :

I love how the blue of the sky and the jacket and the reddishness of the shoes and pinkness of the ground almost make her emerge outwards from the photo, as if she was born to be there at that time. Perfect. Just perfect.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:14 PM) :

Ralph Lauren preppiness meets Scandinavian coolness.
I would never try this style becaues I'm short, but this person looks great. Great pants, and great colors. Beautiful face.

Blogger The Closet Boston said ... (12:20 PM) :

absolutely stunning

Blogger Unknown said ... (12:25 PM) :

This picture is surreal... the colors and geometry are really cool

Blogger Hillary said ... (1:26 PM) :

wow. Not just the outfit, but the backdrop makes this photo indescribable. So beautiful. Well done.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:31 PM) :

wow, stunning. the blazer is perfect. so simple yet so fantastic

Blogger katie l. said ... (1:35 PM) :

The composition of this photo is stunning...the pink walkway just kind of leads you into the sparkling backdrop. I also love the relaxed look on her face and the way her messy hair gives you the illusion that this outfit wasn't planned to a tee (which it obviously was!)

The jacket is a little ill-fitting for my taste, but she worked the proportions well--the clothes are heavy in the middle area (with the pleats and belt) but not overbearing on her frame. Fastening the belt like that MADE the outfit, and those shoes are perfect for the pant.

Blogger Jessica Ferri said ... (1:38 PM) :

wow, the colors are amazing and i love her ensemble. that belt, and the cuffed sleeves really make it . . . also the buttons on the bottom of her pants.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:46 PM) :

The androgyny and laid back look of this outfit is great. She looks like she's wearing her boyfriend's clothes, but at the same time she's very put together.

I wish I knew where I could find pants like those. They're fantastic!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:51 PM) :

great photo!!!!!!

Blogger cokaly said ... (1:57 PM) :

hey sart- i've been reading your blog for a while and really really enjoy everything you have to post. it's absolutely wonderful journalism.

quick question though: i'm traveling to london and paris in a few weeks and am curious what's big over there right now as far as fashion goes for men. i like to blend in when i travel, so if you have any particular tips and/or hints, that would be great.

keep up the awesome work!

Blogger Moniker said ... (2:00 PM) :

wow!
it's like she has her own runway.

i actually thought she was on one, and you took this picture before the start of a fashion show :)

i only realized it wasn't after i enlarged it :-p

love the shoes.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:01 PM) :

What an awesome shot!!!
Where is she standing?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:18 PM) :

Love the shoes and the photograph is just generally amazing, but...are those SHOULDER PADS? I'm getting that 1983 feeling, which maybe was just a bad year for me since it's giving me the heebie-jeebies.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:37 PM) :

Those pants are totally boss, and she pulls them off perfectly.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:52 PM) :

that picture remind's me music from Lost Highway...
Anxiety hidden in colour...
Sue

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:02 PM) :

You are a genious.

That's all I can say. (The blue, the pink, the sand, the lights)

Blogger Olimpia Liberti said ... (3:06 PM) :

beautiful background
like a magic film

Blogger OndrejS said ... (3:10 PM) :

Very interesting picture in terms of colors.
As far as the clothing is concerned I am so not a fan of this style. I know this is highly subjective but I really have the feeling that these pants just make girls.... well.... big thighs, big bottoms. Some call it feminine shapes. I am sorry but to me this is the brute femininity of the stone age. Combined with the unisex jacket this girl, although very beautiful, looses most of its sex appeal to me. There is no elegance to me there...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:28 PM) :

Lovely, lovely Photograph! Great pants, great shoes. I could see her in a blousey white tank top and a tiny cropped sweater vest, mixing the old with the new.

Blogger Mary Elizabeth said ... (3:30 PM) :

love the contrast cuff on the jacket.
the pants are an interesting shape. I think a different belt could have worked better, but overall the outfit works. not to mention the photo itself is magnificent

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:35 PM) :

WOW. Awesome outfit, awesome background. Im noticing a rolled sleeves on jackets trend no?

Blogger Hugh said ... (3:36 PM) :

wow, love it, everything just goes together so well

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:43 PM) :

The colours, subject, depth of field, focus all look surreal! Like Alice in Wonderland meets Dorothy's dusty pink road to OZ, or the French beach. Stunning!

Blogger Hayley's Comment said ... (3:55 PM) :

I can't stop starring at this. I'm mesmerized.

Blogger The Spicers said ... (3:58 PM) :

I don't love her outfit, but agreed, the photo itself is beautiful. Amazing colors!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:23 PM) :

Those pants seem to be "bombachas de campo", the pants gauchos use everyday to work in the argentinian pampas.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:33 PM) :

An amazing picture, as usual. But the outfit reminds me about everything that I hated about the eighties (pleated pants, unflattering proportions, Don Johnson etc) and I realized that I still hate them.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:54 PM) :

So South of France.

It's funny, Sart. At first glance-- probably because I knew what kind of event you were at -- I thought she was in a blue tent "the strand" installation!

Beautiful photo, kiddo.

The clothes? Well, I was post-punk arty in the 80s and hated this sillhouette then... but now? I kinda like it!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:53 PM) :

Big clunky brown sandals with wooden soles and big balloony pants: This is pretty much the uniform on every other Parisian girl, these days.

Blogger suzee said ... (6:07 PM) :

This looks like its in the middle of no where or a barren desert, but here comes a vibrant soul out of it. This photo takes me somewhere.

What is the exact location in France?

Blogger thwany said ... (6:23 PM) :

beautiful

Blogger Liz Lizo said ... (6:33 PM) :

love the photography, only thing i don't like is the pants, as much as I try I just stand them

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:15 PM) :

Aside from how great her outfit is, I kust want to mention what a stunning shot this is. Amazing color, depth and composition.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:27 PM) :

I would have worn those pants in about 1982. Only someone who wasn't born or not old enough to wear them back then would consider them now. When I was in high school in the 70's we sometimes dressed in 1950s style clothes (like saddle shoes) for fun. Like this, it was a costume.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:59 PM) :

stunning picture, sart. the outfit ... not good. just not good.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:06 PM) :

You are, quite simply, a real artist. If this blog was around when I was studying the arts at university, I would have become a photographer, instead of a journalist.
I find real joy in your photographs, Mr. Sartorialist.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:17 PM) :

I don't like the outfit either, but your pics are great, and I always selfishly want to see more more more!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:43 PM) :

this is at the beach??? Wow. I've never seen anyone wear clothes like that at the humid, sandy beach.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:47 PM) :

If I was a woman, I'm sure I'd look like her.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:49 PM) :

Nice job on this pic, Sarto. But there's something funky on your website you need to pay attention to.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:01 PM) :

With such a beautiful background, I'm disappointed in the clothing on the girl.

Another case of the clothes wearing the girl, not vice versa. It's a shame because she really shouldn't have to try so hard.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:03 PM) :

something about the colors and the string of lights gives an old school circus/fairground quality to the picture. it's magical! love it!!!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:33 PM) :

I am not trying to be anonymous, but, having not yet posted a comment, I don't know how to offer an observation without having in hand, as it were, an "identity." (I have one, I am reasonably sure, though not so much in hand.)

Let me just say that I love this site. I love it, truly. It is romantic in all the best possible ways. And though I do not have occasion to be try every inspiration, times and places being what they are, I do regularly feel inspired. Which, times and places being what they are, is an extraordinary thing.

And so I must confess. This outfit is not for me. It is not perfect. It is not even great. True, the photography is, as it always is. And the eye for something distinctive, yes.

But I wonder. Are not some of these pictures taken with irony? Even a little?

In this ironic moment, times being, et tout ca, not every one of these pictures is meant to be admiring, surely. Just interested. Which is wonderful, to have been piqued. But some are perfect, and most not. And this one is too, for my plebeian tastes, too boyfriend-rolled.

But please do continue. I am in your debt.

Blogger the brunette said ... (9:52 PM) :

this is absolutely dreamy.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:30 PM) :

this picture is so surreal
i love it so much

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:37 PM) :

this is amazing! what a backdrop! its like a circus! she is very cute.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:57 PM) :

Fantastic picture! I assume you had to use a tripod for this, right? And is that a flash illuminating her or just ambient light and a long exposure?

Blogger Hard Luck Hero said ... (12:30 AM) :

this photo is out of this world. My mind is completely blown. It looks like a painting! Bravo.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:37 AM) :

Does anyone know who the shoes are by? They're so cute!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:00 AM) :

"Follow the pink brick road"....
definitely not Kansas!
Kudos to the Wizard(ry) of Sart!

Blogger Laurenn said ... (1:37 AM) :

Not something I would ever attempt to wear, but it really has character and she looks totally at ease in it. And the colors really are amazing. I love love love the strings of light. It's so surreal.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:38 AM) :

the colorsm the background and the relaxed but dressed up girl looks amazing

Blogger 3curb said ... (2:12 AM) :

I thought this shot has a hint of Lacroix.

Maybe its the vibrant colors...she could well be standing in a Christian Lacroix Fashion show.

Great Picture, you make candid shots look GOOD!!!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:19 AM) :

god these pants are everywhere! but the lady looks really good

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:53 AM) :

The style is definitely there, but the pants are too big for her - they are not as flattering as could be. It's all about proportions.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:25 AM) :

I loved the '80s, but it's true sometimes the fashions weren't so flattering. The pleats and fullness up top, narrowing at the ankle make her look like she has thunder thighs, which is impossible since all women in the south of France are slim as cigarettes.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:12 AM) :

Magical shot!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:20 AM) :

Her beauty moves me. Her wide bone structure looks great in this outfit. From her neck to her ankles, it's bold and masculine, but those cuffs and shoes are aggressively feminine and sexy. Wonderful balance. I am in love.

Blogger suzannemarques said ... (6:12 AM) :

love the shapes here! the shoes are gorgeous. i love the extreme style of the pants, but i don't know if i'd have the confidence to wear them!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:40 AM) :

I guess pleated pants making a come-back!

-VD-

Blogger InStudio Blog said ... (10:13 AM) :

Love this photo! The colors are intense! It looks like a movie setting on a long pier with carnival rides and, maybe - a proposal by nights' end.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:23 AM) :

wow, you must have very still hands. I would have blurred the hell out of this picture with those light conditions. very nice!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:24 AM) :

there are no words to describe this color combination - it is brilliant! not a fan of the pants, but love everything else.

Blogger LittleMexicanGirl said ... (12:18 PM) :

I love her pants!! The bottoms remind me of sleeves...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:23 PM) :

I like this pic....i feel a slightly tailored jacket (in the same colour) would be a better option.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:47 PM) :

I love this site-it clears my head out,somehow-But why are there so very few pictures of women over twenty five?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:04 PM) :

This photo is incredible. It's like Stardust Memories, but in color. I can picture Marie-Christine Barrault in this outfit. Beautiful. Like a dream.

Blogger Jana FitzGerald said ... (3:13 PM) :

this photograph is fantastic. the silhouette of her pants, she cut of her jacket, the shoes, the lights in the background, the foggy french blue cote d'azur, this is completely breathtaking. it looks like a still from a film that i would wait in line 2 hrs to see.

http://raraavisarewe.blogspot.com/

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:32 PM) :

Love the shot - absolutely gorgeous, but is she seriously doing that belt thing from the 80's? And those pants?!?!?!?! Honey, please!

Blogger Unknown said ... (3:47 PM) :

the picture is stunning, and the look... perfect.
she's so femenine, even with these clothes.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:52 PM) :

Lovely photo. I like the retro pants and jacket. It's interesting to see longer looser jackets coming back after all the shrunken ones we've seen for a while now.

That belt, though, ugh. I've seen people wear belts this way before, with the long dangling end just hanging there...it just looks so vulgar - like a big tongue sticking out from her pants. It reminds me of a codpiece too, meant to draw attention to the crotch in a too-obvious way. Is it just me who sees it like this?

Blogger Meg said ... (4:30 PM) :

The shoes are immense, and I love the backdrop, but I have a problem with this blazer - I get the period ref, but it's just not flattering. The scenery make it a gorgeous picture nonetheless.

Blogger The Boot said ... (5:47 PM) :

What's with all the 80's haters out there? There are 80's looks that are tired to be sure, but this looks so comfortable, cool and sexy.
This woman is dy-no-mite...and on a set like that (remember the film "Betty Blue"?) I dare you not to fall in love.

Blogger grace e. said ... (6:32 PM) :

it's very balenciaga, all she needs is a vibrant scarf!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:55 PM) :

*Very* unique pants (but only someone with very slender upper legs could really pull this look off...), and one of the best shots I've seen from you so far. :D

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:31 PM) :

lovely lovely lovely! positively stunning

Blogger Unknown said ... (9:41 PM) :

LOVE IT! even though i had the same outfit in 8th grade.

Blogger Unknown said ... (5:41 AM) :

I actually love both: the clothes and the background!
Personally, there are some kinds of clothes I'd never try on, or have no courage to try...
But I just love the way she looks.

Blogger gabrielazeanadal@hotmail.com said ... (6:47 AM) :

This looks like an impressionist painting.

Blogger Chike-Ikechi said ... (7:15 AM) :

the background really evokes a dream-like, fairytale vibe in the picture! The zig-zag path (kind of like the yellow-brick road a la Wizard Of Oz, but red brick) and the dots of white light littered over a rich blue backdrop all add to the dreamy effect. Love how the blues of the shirt and backdrop contrast nicely. Pants are definitely new to me...haven't seen those before!

Blogger Sam said ... (10:31 AM) :

The backdrop is brilliant! Great capture!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:39 AM) :

Love the heels !!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:04 PM) :

one of the best photos i ever seen in this blogue.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:14 AM) :

I'm mesmerised by this picture. It's so dreamy and unreal because everything about it is so beautiful.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:42 PM) :

I love how every piece to the look just comes to together and works wonderfully together. The pants are phenomenal. I love the button detailing on the ankle. Also, the blue blazer is so ethereal and airy and compliments the khaki pants. I also love the leather ballerina shoes- very neat!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:42 PM) :

OK. I love the shot, the setting, it's beautiful and feels like a long lost carnival. But the clothes to me are not attractive. Too baggy in the pants, and thighs and no shape to the top.

Blogger aviewaskew said ... (10:58 PM) :

magical photo~ candyland colors..

Blogger style-magnet said ... (10:00 AM) :

there's something...I dunno.. really 80s about this that I like. a lot. her swimmer's hair, the hot pink hot blue, tapered pants and blazer. all very wonderful.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:21 PM) :

This mess doesn't seem like it could work, but it does for some reason.

I would feel like a fool in this rig, but she seems young and stylish.

Viva la difference!

:-)

Blogger Zoe said ... (6:28 PM) :

I've had this as my wallpaper for a while, having to explain it to anyone looking over my shoulder at my laptop. It is just amazing, I think it's the colours that I like the most, delicious, very Tim Walker, followed by the designer version of the Pierre Hardy/Gap shoes I own and cannot walk in. The matching belt, the jodhpur-peg crossover. I want to live there and be her, simple as that.
