I read an interview with Mariuccia Mandelli today in Corriere della Sera in which she stated everyone should dress the way that makes them feel the best. This echos what I have read from Giorgio Armani. In a sense both scoff at traditional fashion worldview and say fashion is a form of personal expression so follow your intution and enjoy yourself.. In that spirit I would like to say that this young lady looks to have chosen exactly the look that she is comfortable in. Even the flip flops, which I generally would never think of wearing outside the beach, look just fine on her in the big city.

I like how simple and clean this looks. The tones on her are beautiful as well. It is also nice that it doesn't look like something that would be unobtainable (price or body limitations). I also really like how the bag somehow fits in. I have trouble wearing my over the shoulder bags with dresses without looking off.

Flip flops are *not* shoes! And they never, ever will look elegant.

Great photo as always: I love the mottled sunlight on her chest in particular.

The dress is not super-exciting, except for the hem perhaps, but you make her look great.

This is an interesting picture right after your last post. Completely simple and subtle versus bold and crazy. I think she looks pretty, but I'm not really all that excited about it. The white is beautiful on her skin. I kind of wish her hair was more interesting. Everything about this is soooo normal and pretty that I kind of wish there was something that made it interesting to me.

also I just don't think the hair/face/glasses all work well together. But the white/cream mix on her skin is gorgeous and I like the wide strap on the bag

Pretty girl-- terrible choice of footwear: flip-flops are bad enough, but beat-up, worn-out flip-flops are unforgivable.

BTW, at first glance, she looks like she's slightly leaning on a walking stick. Then on closer inspection, I realized that the "stick" is just an illusion created by the gap in the pavement!

i live in vancouver where yesterday started off sunny. by the time i walked out of the coffee shop (~4:45pm), it was hailing. when i left my boyfriend's house (~11pm), it was snowing.

so, in short, this photo is like a dream to me : )

Very pretty dress (the color is great for her skin), and I like the unconventional bag choice. The accessories are subtle but match nicely.

One major problem for me though...I HATE flip-flops! I feel like a better flat sandal would have really pulled this look together.

yikes. i'm first! is it really that warm in NYC? LA, this last week, was in the 90s and this would have been great, but i am finding it hard to believe it was warm where you are. is this wishful thinking on her part? did she have goosebumps?

regardless, the dress is very cute, i like the fullness of it, the suggestion of layers or a tissue thin fabric. i like that her purse, sunglasses and flip-flops are all in the same color range. the crack in the sidewalk - i thought it was a cane! until i looked at the bigger picture. nice shot. good to see a blue sky!

Okay, being a college student, I like how this picture gives the message that good, clean, comfortable style is available to those with less cash in their pockets. HOWEVER, H&M might be a cheap road to fashion, but their clothes are of consistently shoddy quality. For the less wealthy, it would actually be much more cost-efficient to purchase clothes that are more expensive but last longer and are more timeless in style. H&M, though being accessible, is mass-produced and a cop-out of good, careful design.

stop hating on the flip flops. i love great shoes as much as anyone, but sometimes it's not about that. flips are practical and easy for walking and shopping.

what people seem to be missing here is what sartorialist captured in this photograph-i.e., sometimes the parts add up to a greater sum. what sart captured here is not what this woman is wearing, but her ability to project herself and be comfortable in her own skin-the greatest accessory. it is not about labels in this case, but charisma holding everything together; each element might not be commes des garcon, but she is the element that bring it all together and makes it work, which is the essence of style. even the flip flops: what they do is provide her legs to stretch uninterrupted, in a natural way. it wouldn't necessarily work on everyone but she has the legs to pull it off.

Dressing for the weather!
Today in Boston it was sunny with a sea breeze. All the tourists in town for the Marathon on Monday were wearing what maybe is acceptable in Atlanta or Houston in April, but clearly freezing to death on a deceptively sunny day.
My pet peeve: people who jump the gun and don't dress for the weather. And the distressing fact that many shops have summer gear in February, right about when you need to recharge the winter wardrobe. Was it really warm enough for "Naomi " to be so summery?

I live in Southern Califiornia and we wear flip flops to work on Fridays at times. Its not a statement..its comfort and she has managed to look comfortable and adorable at the same time. OMG! Enough with the beating up of the flipflops... As die hard New Yorker and a die hard Reef wearer I think flip flops just scream "nice weather" and make my feet happy. People don't walk out of the house thinking "today I am going to pose for a photo" - they think of standing in the subways, uneven pavements, and a whole winter of being stuck in boots. You are all just jealous of the weather.

Sorry folks, but flip-flops are not shoes. They might be footwear, but not shoes. Shoes should flatter the foot and the leg. Sadly these do neither.

Flip-flops are for the beach or the shower room.

There is nothing mildly sartorial about this look. Sorry but it has to be said.

Its not a look I would expect to see often in NYC especially in April but it was in the 70's here yesterday (Cape Cod).

We are a beach area and so see flip flops with even dressier sun dresses here (the Cape is not known for its good fashion, thats for sure) but the only think I don't really like about them is I can NOT imagine walking all over NYC in them, by the end of the day your feet would be filthy (and I need to keep my feet immaculate).

All in all its a simple look that is fantastic on here. I want to add I don't think she looks anything like Naomi.

RE New York Weather -

Like many people, on the first day the temperature climbs above 70 (fahrenheit) many New Yorkers pull out the shorts and tank tops - or as here, the sundress. We "rush the season", and for a couple of days we could. (But be sure to have a sweater or jacket when the sun goes down.) Today (Sunday) we're back at cloudy and 50, a reminder that April is, if not the crueles month, an unpredictable one.

I like this photo not because of the outfit (though the dress looks great on her), but because of the mood and sense of place that the shadows, sunlight, restaurant sign, delivery bicycle (is that what's on her left?) and two green dots from the traffic lights convey. Yeah, yeah, I have to join the chorus against the flip flops! I object to the flip flops not just in this outfit, but in a general way. They are gross. They are lazy dressing. They are dirty. And I don't want to see your feet, even if they are nicely manicured. I can't stand listening to sound of them flip flopping, either. I understand the general point that you were trying to make with this picture, but I would hope not to see people pictured wearing these yucky "shoes" as stylish people. Flip flops show an absence of style, exept in the pool shower.

wow, i had no idea people hated flip flops so much! i love them, but do have to say i would think twice about wearing them in a city as dirty as new york. the bottom of your feet would be disgusting by the end of the day! she is certainly beautiful in a casual and lighthearted way... but does she look like naomi campbell? well she does have brown skin and long black hair, but so do millions of other black women out there. i am constantly being told that i look like macy gray only because I have an afro! do all skinny blonde white girls look like scarlett johanson? think about it.

ok, it was a little squicky to read so many people's comments about how she looks like naomi. she doesn't appear to actually look like her, and one might balk that people are choosing the one woman of color they can identify, with whom to compare her.

BUT.. naomi has a signature hairstyle and signature sunglasses style, and the girl's basic facial proportions are relatively similar to naomi's. i think we could all agree that if we saw a woman with a crisp, banged, honey-colored bob and large, face-obscuring sunglasses that people might also respond with knee-jerk comparisons to ms. wintour, even if the actual resembelance wasn't particularly uncanny.

and to whomever said that shoes have to flatter one's feet to be considered actual footwear, that's a rather bizarre- and subjective- distinction to make. if that's the benchmark, then i officially declare uggs as un-shoelike. super-pointy-toed shoes don't particularly flatter feet (feet aren't naturally shaped anything like a classic pump), but they're flattering in that they make one's legs look longer. and they certainly don't flatter feet over years of wear. have you ever seen bunions? frightening.

would the flipflops be better if they had a suede sole and a braided leather strap? they'd still be flipflops. how about reexamining what's considered attractive, and recognizing what's natural. sure, i personally wear heels, but women aren't built to walk on tiptoes constantly. i think flat sandals are plenty flattering on a nicely-pedicured foot.

Uhh, that's exactly why I DO NOT wear flipflops. Leaving nothing but a slim piece of rubber between your foot and the filthy subway and brutal pavement below does not appeal to me. I cringe every time I see the nasty soles of flipflop wearers' feet, particularly in the city. Sooo gross.

I normally hate the kind of dress this young woman is wearing but it looks sweet on her. I love the hem and the contrast against her skin. Would've looked a lot better with a nice sandal though. I also love the shadows in this picture.

if i wore that cream dress, i would be tempted to add lots of colorful accessories. but she did an amazing monochromatic look. i love it. sunglasses, pruse, bracelet, flip-flops, all beige. it's perfect. and, for those folks who say flip flops are not for the city. honestly? i may have only lived in new york for five years, but summers were FILLED with flip flops - they make sense in the heat and humidity. and they are comfortable when you run down subway stairs.

The flipflop bashintg is ridiculous. What makes this look is the innocence and "ingenue" feel it generates. The purity of the white combined to the fact that she can probably count the number of clothing items on the fingers of one hand, and that's including sunglasses, bags and bangle!

Flip flops is iconic to Australia because of its beach culture. Beach wear is the staple in Singapore because of the hot climate. This works for me, and I like the way her sunglasses is sitting right underneath her fringe. Nothing wrong with flip flops in this context.

Of course there are rules about where to wear certain shoes. Some people actually even still care about them. Flip-flops are for the beach or the shower room. Certainly not for walking around downtown. Sandals would have been different. Unfortunately, many people do not follow rules anymore and hence never graduate into dressing like adults. I like the sunglasses - the "Jackie-Os" - but I can't imagine Jackie walking around downtown in flip-flops.

when I was a stay-at-home dad I always wore flip-flops when I was taking my kids to the park and I felt very much like a grown-up and still very stylish.

if you have ever poured half of a sandpit out of your shoe and your kids shoe when returning from the park you will understand the very real need for flip-flops in the city.

what this comes down to is that every lifestyle seems to have its own "rules" and there are a lot of different lifestyle in this big city.

Thank you for your comment. This is probably a difference in age, generations, etc. When I was growing up in the city, I remember going to the park with my father and he never wore flip-flops. My father might have worn Purcell's and odd grey trousers with turn ups to the park, but flip-flops were reserved for the beach or the locker room at summer camp or the club. They are just not stylish or sartorial. They were probably never seen in the city on Grant, Cooper, Astaire, Agnelli or the Duke of W., all men who were living examples of Sartorialists.

Sand in your shoes does sound unpleasant. Hope that they weren't benchmade. Cheers for the discussion.

I have nothing against flip flops as an option - BUT running in them, anywhere, especially on a city street or up and down subway stairs, is a risky proposition. Strolling through the neighborhood or to the park? No big deal. A day traversing the city or out to dinner? Choose something with more support in the one case, something less basic in the other.

Feet do a tremendous amount of work - be good to them, or at about 50 yrs you'll find that while the rest of you wants to keep kicking another 30 years, your poor trotters are going on strike.

People who hate flip-flops must be really unhappy because they're everywhere and they're probably here to stay. These people, had they lived in the decades they like to refer to (Jackie O? There's a new century just starting, people, how about a new set of "rules", should we need any.

The ubiquity of flip-flops is indeed the cause for tears, for it marks the general decline of, not only sartorial standards, but just plain good dressing habits. Just because many people wear them does not make them elegant, sartorially interesting or attractive. I am sure I will get taken to the woodshed for this, but Americans are consistently some of the the worst dressed people on the planet. The proof for this uncharitable assertion? One needs only to travel the world a bit to see it.

There is a difference between having fun with 'the rules' of fashion, bending them, even breaking them, and asserting that they are not needed at all. When they are no longer wanted, it will be a sign that the hordes are at the gate and we will enter the Dark Ages again. The collective memory of the past discarded. Flip-flips are only a small sign of this sad trend. Indeed, they are everywhere.

Women wearing trousers? Nothing wrong with that. The examples of Katherine Hepburn and Coco Chanel are famous. But they did it with taste and originality. Sloppiness only earns negative sartorial marks.

In Australia everyone wears flip flops (Havaianas!)- and now I live in California - I still wear them a lot. I think flip flops look great, as long as they're not worn out and old. Team them up with a pedicure and voila! This girl dresses very Australian - very northern beaches, Sydney. I think this colour suits her beautifully also.

hahaha. I couldn't even get through all the comments, there's just so many, but the freak-out about flip flops is just plain funny. I live in Australia, in an inland city, but we all wear them everywhere in summer - including on a day-long trample round the city. They're comfy, laid back, and suit this girls outfit perfectly.
Anyone who thinks that that flip flops cannot be stylish has a very narrow view of style - style is not the sum of what you wear, it's also about the way you wear it.

I love the photo. Gorgeous lighting, with late afternoon sunlight casting slanted shadows on the pavement and on her skin. The background has lots of elements but isn't too busy and really makes her stand out. I like her contemplative look. She has a great presence and the photo really captured that.
But this photo as a fashion inspiration? Not so much. Her look is sweet, simple and clean. It's attractive, flip flops and all, but it's not really something I expected to appear on The Sartorialist...it's almost - dare I say it - boring. Or have we become too accustomed to shots of people with more individualised style? Either way, I hope photos like these are replaced in favour of those that combine this girl's poise and the usual out-of-the-ordinary fashion choices seen in other photos on this blog.

I think she looks great - very natural and a carefree, unfussy style for a warm gorgeous day spent in Manhattan.

People always talk abut how bad flip-flops are, but really, in NYC everybody isn't always in heels b/c they walk everywhere. In summer this means sometimes you break out the flip-flops because they are COMFY and summery. Especially if you're in a low-key mood. Style isn't always about constrictive clothing.

My cousin moved to NYC a few years ago for her great job after living her whole life either in California or the South where flip-flops are ok attire. I met her for dinner after she got out of work one night and she was wearing an immaculate white tailored suit and when I complimented her on it she then pointed out her 'commuter' shoes - white flip-flops that she wore on the way to work and back! Stop being snobs, flip-flops have their place and it's not just at the beach for a lot of people.

isn't funny how we view individual-thrown-together style as fashion....when the majority of these "fashionistas" look like cardboard cutouts of eachother. They view these pictures to get inspiration. Inspiration on how to throw anything on and try to appear as thought they put no thought into it at all.
So then, there she is, a girl in a simple white dress with dare I say... simple flip-flops...and some people get up in arms about how un-inspiring and how un-fashion she is. The lovely thing is....
Anything goes in FASHION. Individual style is what makes fashion so great. If you have the confidence to walk tall with what you throw on that day, that's what matters. So, your a bit trendy, artsy, emo, rocker, punk, earthy...etc. What's the deal? I would bet that if this young lady had striped knee socks on with her toes wrapped around the thong of the flip-flop everyone on this blog would probably think it was the most avantgard look. Heres a clue..go back to the top of this blog and re-read it!
