WOW! This really is amazing and truly inspiring! Feels like she just stepped out of a time machine.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:47 AM) :

I absolutely gasped when i saw this. She is amazing and the shot itself is awe-inspiring. The colours are perfect. I'm still catching flies

This is beautiful! Very 1920's.

Blogger heidi said ... (7:41 AM) :

stunning.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:42 AM) :

SO beautiful!!
She looks as if she should be staying at Shangahi's Cathay Hotel (now Peace Hotel) Where's Noel Coward?
Exquisite photo, Sart.

Blogger Alex said ... (7:43 AM) :

beautiful dress. beautiful woman. great headband. awesome picture!!!

Blogger xx.e said ... (7:46 AM) :

Parisian chic!!
Funny because today I finally decided to get with it and mention Kiraz's "Les Parisiennes," an ongoing exhibition featuring Edmond Kiraz's chic cartoon depictions of equally irresistibly chic French women at le Musee Carnavalet. I think he would approve.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:46 AM) :

Indescribably elegant, yet I cannot help but think it's spoilt somewhat by that wristwatch. Stands out a bit.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:55 AM) :

While the others seem to work, this one comes off a bit costumey... maybe it's the pose and the parasol?

Blogger Carolina Lange said ... (8:12 AM) :

That is fantastic! Love it!

Blogger Jaime said ... (8:57 AM) :

So gorgeous!

(Is that a tail?)

Blogger Unknown said ... (8:57 AM) :

This is the winner.

Blogger konst said ... (9:03 AM) :

woah!that's sooo pretty love the umbrela

Blogger yuppie hipster said ... (9:09 AM) :

gorgeous!

Blogger gabrielazeanadal@hotmail.com said ... (9:11 AM) :

Wow! I love these one, what a beautiful parasol, I would use one like this everyday, even if I wasn't going to a costume party, but I guess I'd just look too out of our times.

Blogger Anthony said ... (9:21 AM) :

these jazz age lawn party pictures are amazing.

i wish i knew people who'd have parties with such fabulous themes.

Blogger photolexx said ... (9:23 AM) :

this is a gorgeous photo.

the lighting, the outfit, even the colour scheme.

reminds me of the great gatsby, which i guess was the desired effect.

:)

Blogger Paul Pincus said ... (9:25 AM) :

love this...she reminds me so much of ann magnuson.

cheers.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:37 AM) :

WOW.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:44 AM) :

I love her dress. The parasol frames her very well, beautiful pic!

Blogger Katherine Leedale said ... (9:50 AM) :

F. Scott Fitzgerald eat your heart out. Rich Americans were so much better than English aristocracy during the Jazz Age and this shot epitomises all that 'new money' decadence.

How do I throw such a great costume party?

Blogger Natalie said ... (10:04 AM) :

I love the composition of the photo (as usual :o)!
She seems to be made of porcelain, - and fragile.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:05 AM) :

She looks unreal!

Her hair looks really really beautiful with her lovely headband and her creamy colour outfit that really compliments her skin.
And the pretty colours in her umbrella keep all the plain colours from looking too plain!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:06 AM) :

incredible!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:38 AM) :

I love the simple touches on this outfit, but what stood out to me the most (or at least made me enlarge the picture), was the woman's headpiece. It's absolutely gorgeous.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:39 AM) :

The parasol - an excellent summer accessory. It's a double shot of style and a great way to avoid skin cancer.
The delicate flowers really set it off and compliment the elegance of the dress. Great line on the dress, it elongates her figure and is a nice subtle shade.

Blogger Kelly said ... (10:48 AM) :

I really wanted to go to this event but was out of town :( She looks gorgeous - the haircut suits her and I love the hairpiece and the umbrella. Can't quite make out the details of the rest of the ensemble - from this angle it almost looks like she has a tail of some sort - but it definitely gives off a jazzy, flapperesque vibe.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:54 AM) :

oh... really beautiful!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:58 AM) :

I love how the drama of the clothes complement the dramatic angles of her face. Beautiful profile.

Blogger Blue Floppy Hat said ... (11:14 AM) :

I can't actually get that much of an idea about this lady's clothes from your shot, but what a stunning shot it is. The halo formed by the parasol around her head, the (jewelled?) headband, and the light colour of her top and skirt just make her look like a modern angel. I can't help but love the effect..

Blogger Unknown said ... (11:16 AM) :

beautiful silhouette.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:21 AM) :

Photowise: gorgeous colours, and i love how sharp her dress looks, silky smooth...love it. You composed it perfectly.

dresswise: I love the gold and the umbrella. She looks like a character out of some jap video game

Blogger The Spicers said ... (11:24 AM) :

Absolutely lovely!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:27 AM) :

very nice image, I really like the colours and the composition! martin

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:44 AM) :

beautiful light

Blogger Adiel | Rose Gold Lining said ... (11:49 AM) :

Love the parasol!

Blogger jen said ... (12:03 PM) :

ooh, let's go back to this era!!!

Blogger Unknown said ... (12:14 PM) :

this outfit has more of an oriental feel than a jazz-aged flapper to it. mainly because of the length of the dress. she wouldnt be able to flap! lol but also because of the v-neck. oh and of course the umbrella contributes to that feel as well.

still an fantastic, breathtaking picture! it looks as if it was taken on the courtyard of gatsby's mansion.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:15 PM) :

the wagasa and its contrast with the green of the grass is probably the best element of this photo :)
but then again, her pose compliments that

Blogger Jana said ... (12:26 PM) :

Wow, beautiful shot! And that parasol is so elegant.

Blogger Persephone said ... (12:35 PM) :

very flapper chic.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:48 PM) :

Wow. Fantastic look. Especially the matchup of the headband with the pattern on the parasol.

This is the best photo I've seen on this site in a while. Simply mesmerizing.

Blogger Rice and Beans Vintage said ... (1:22 PM) :

Ahh..that dress!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:29 PM) :

Beautiful! Reminds me of Daisy Buchanan. Those were the days, Sart. Those were the days.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:31 PM) :

this is quite immense

Blogger Anne Corrons said ... (2:07 PM) :

She seems to be in a different world! And, we are still in NY!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:17 PM) :

"I would use one like this everyday, even if I wasn't going to a costume party, but I guess I'd just look too out of our times."

And just what is so great about our times?

Besides, all fashion is costume. The difference is merely a matter of degree.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:33 PM) :

What period is considered the Jazz Age? I'm wondering about this because this person's dress is inspired by the twenties while jazz reached its peak until 1935 - 1940. Bebop didn't come in style until the 1940's.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:52 PM) :

It's a Gatsby dream come true: what a delight!

Blogger Joanna Goddard said ... (2:54 PM) :

gorgeous!!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:58 PM) :

I love that, I just got my hair cut like that, and I was worrying that it is too short.

Now I feel better.

Blogger KT said ... (3:35 PM) :

She is wearing pants, not a skirt. Lounge outfits like this were very popular during the 20's & 30's.

Lovely photo.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:37 PM) :

hi, i'm a little girl from sweden who wish you would update more often! PLEASE?

Blogger Miriam Parkman said ... (3:41 PM) :

Simply stunning.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:58 PM) :

This is my absolute favorite era for vintage fashion. Her outfit (which appears to be separates - top and pants of the period), her hair, her Chinese parasol...it's beautiful. I can even forgive the modern wristwatch. And, your photo captures it all perfectly. Sigh.

BTW: This Jazz Age party is so popular now, I heard that Governors Island is throwing another one in September. I hope so!

Blogger Post-it boy said ... (4:02 PM) :

That lawn is amazing. Reminds me on Wimbledon in the summer of 78.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:12 PM) :

The headband makes it hands down.

Blogger Syed said ... (4:16 PM) :

Wow, this is simply stunning!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:27 PM) :

Is that Alita, from Charm School Design? She has such great style, and this is an outstanding photograph.

Blogger dominicandandy said ... (4:36 PM) :

To think that Gatsby enjoyed this lifestyle every day. The women, the clothes, the lawn parties! OOh, to be Gatsby for just one weekend.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:47 PM) :

ahhh the 1920s poiret look!!! Love it

Blogger eeps. said ... (5:52 PM) :

she came on the ferry with me, and my friends and i called her the "pajama lady" all day. she looked like she was about 15 degrees cooler than everyone else, temperature-wise. her partner was pretty awesomely dressed too, and they danced amazingly.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:47 PM) :

it is a brave look....but a 1920 Cartier wrist watch would be the right thing...or a long sartoir....anyone shares my thought?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:55 PM) :

I'm too lazy to Google, but will make a stab at answering someone's up-thread question.

I believe "The Jazz Age" is pretty much the 1920s (Sandwiched between the horrors of The Great War and the crashing letdown of The Depression.) and was term coined by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

PS - Sart, I'd love to see another angle of this lounging pajama.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:00 PM) :

Makes me wish the House of Elliott would come back!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:36 PM) :

Really like this site. The typos are a little distracting, but I like your POV.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:58 PM) :

Awesome shot, my fav in the blog!

Blogger marijane said ... (10:27 PM) :

amazing.
daisy buchanan's badass sister.

Blogger david m. said ... (10:29 PM) :

masterfully taken. the soft focus on the background is perfect, as is your position for the photo. The angle is perfectly oriented to catch the full spectrum of the umbrella, and the shadow stretching out behind her.

amazing. thank you for your craft.

Blogger Terren said ... (11:25 PM) :

wow.

Blogger stephen said ... (11:29 PM) :

way to beat the heat with a parasol

Blogger Seanrwatson2 said ... (12:34 AM) :

Hands down the best look I've seen on the Sartorialist. She's a little wrinkled up, but looking past that she looks like a sleek bar of gold. The silver watch with the white face and the white headband and white parasol are a perfect compliment to the gold and burnt umber of the dress. The floral pattern adds sophistication. There's royalty.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:14 AM) :

That is absolutely gorgeous.
The skirt just wraps around her so nicely.
Everything fits. I love it.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:53 AM) :

I must be the only person not that keen on this. Her hairpiece looks cheap to me, and a little 80's metal, the way her hair comes over it. The watch really spoils the look, breaking up the elegance of the lines of her dress next to her arms. Saying that it is difficult to make out her dress- does she have a tail? Is that a gun on her right hip? The parasol is costumey. I know i'm being picky but what the heck.

Blogger An Aesthete's Lament said ... (8:44 AM) :

Beautifully imagined, beautifully executed. The parasol is a terrific touch. Of all the people you've shown at this event, she gets it, totally gets it. The only false note is the modern watch; she should have a barbaric Chinese bracelet or a wrist wrapped with several strands of pink pearls.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:33 AM) :

These pictures catch the era well, but IMO there have been quite a few `theme´picture series lately and I for one would like to see something different.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:41 AM) :

Love, love, LOVE this!! Anyone who knows me knows that I love the "flapper" silhouette and the Japanese design elements that inspired so much art during that age. Now I have to make one of those dresses... <3

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:53 PM) :

All of your pictures are amazing, but this one really jumped off the page. I also love that you captured a side profile, adding an air of mystery to the geisha vibe.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:31 PM) :

LOVE*

Blogger queengilda said ... (1:09 AM) :

oh she's lovely!!! i have a japanese paper fan too but never had the chance to use it!!

Blogger Saucy said ... (2:04 AM) :

Dressing for theme parties amuses me no end. I love this.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:38 PM) :

Of all the pictures you have ever posted, this has to be my favorite. Everything is perfect: the colors, sun, everything. I love her hair and outfit.

Perfect.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:41 AM) :

I simply adore the silhouette and the color of this Asian inspired '20 dress. The little paper(?) umbrella and the hair decorations completes the look. But unfortunately she down grades her garment with a watch! Pitty,
