On the Street.....Shorts & Cardigan, Here and Abroad

I love wearing shorts in the Summer but it is often hard to feel "dressed" wearing shorts while maintaining the casual feel that you want from shorts.

Working shorts (especially the dressier wool shorts I've been seeing a lot lately) back to a cardigan seems like a great solution. At least everytime time i see it done it usually looks really good.

For me this Summer I'm wearing a lot of shorts with super-lightweight, unlined jackets.
They work even better for me because they fit a little looser and when I am out shooting all day I have more to carry (extra battery , CF cards etc) than I can carry in a cardigan.

I have recently bought jackets from Engineered Garments, Junya Watanabe, and 45 RPM. I find I'm having an Italian Winter and a Japanese Summer.

I will have to do a separate post on these jackets soon, maybe during Pitti when I am really putting them to the test.

Both are gorgeous looks, I especially like the green of the second guy's cardigan, and the lighting of the first pic is amazing! Keep up the good work! Can't wait to see your jacket exploration :-D

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:51 AM) :

Love the green cardigan it just perfect.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:53 AM) :

love the green cardigan and the first picture is just beautiful. Love the bag on the first pic plus the shoes on the second pic.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:00 AM) :

Both of these men have terrific style. However, I'm partial to the look of the man in the second photo just because the colors look vibrant yet casual. Shorts in the city, during the spring/summer, let's hope more men will be inspired by this look.

Blogger Sam said ... (9:10 AM) :

Dude #1 - I dig the look, but think his sunglasses are too big for his face.
Dude #2 - Also dig this look, but think the cardigan is a little small on him.
All in all, two very well put together dudes.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:11 AM) :

I would like to marry guy #2 if he likes girls.

#1 is a close second.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:11 AM) :

I LOVE dressing this way. You can't go wrong with Goyard accessories or popos of green.

Blogger amy said ... (9:28 AM) :

feeling old and fuddy duddy. could our european friends chime in on the shorts in europe these days? thought it was taboo. hate when i see the tourist in shorts, but if done like these two stylish men, would be welcomed.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:29 AM) :

Love the green cardigan/blue shorts look. I like his tight cardigan - it's more modern. He's got good legs and has got the shoes right. I think with men's shorts the appropriate shoe is crucial. Getting it wrong can mess up the whole outfit, get it right and it's perfect.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:32 AM) :

ps - Sart 45RPM jacket sounds great - such a cool store....

Blogger The Sartorialist said ... (9:35 AM) :

for Amy
the second shot was taken in Paris and has a very Euro feel to me

Blogger Laguna Beach Fogey said ... (9:49 AM) :

Nice photos, Sart. This is a nice look, especially Chap #2. I love cardigans, and yes, I have been known to wear a cotton cardigan with shorts. Nice OCBD, shorts, and driving mocs.

Blogger Alice Olive said ... (9:54 AM) :

These are both great. I particualarly like the first shot (no doubt partly because of that amazing light!) but also he looks slightly more tailored.

A short is never going to look as polished as a trouser. And that applies to men and women in my mind.

But the accessories and the overall fit of each piece in the ensemble can take it up a very nice little notch.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:18 AM) :

When it gets hot out though, how can you still make shorts dressy and grown up? Is it the shoes? Wearing only polos or button downs and tucked in? I'm researching for my husband who is turning 32 but looks like he's 18 still at times.

By the way, I ADORE your photos and especially your commentary. I have been inspired to make changes in the way I dress by what I've seen here.

Blogger raguandroses said ... (10:33 AM) :

Love it!Will suggest it to my boyfriend.I think another good mix is shorts+ a t-shirt+ a gilet.

Blogger Sann said ... (10:38 AM) :

Omg, I love the 2nd guy's outfit and especially the shoes! Anyone who can tell me what brand and where to get?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:39 AM) :

Why are you all so afraid of shorts? I live in a larger city Charlotte, NC, normally with great weather, however it is 98F here today, I would just die in pants or a cardigan if I had to be outside for more than 15mins. Why are shorts acceptable on women but not men? When is suffering for fashion really SUFFERING?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:01 AM) :

both of these look good- i really want to see your jackets esp the EG and 45rpm.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:02 AM) :

ok, i'm inspired. thanx for the pix sart.

Blogger Unknown said ... (11:13 AM) :

these guys are definitely fresh....

the sunglasses on the first guy are a bit much but his look is cool...

the second guy looks like he didnt try to put the outfit together...it just came together and not to mention help from LV with the shoes doesn't hurt either

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:39 AM) :

Top guy takes the prize.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:44 AM) :

the second one does have that feel... cobblestones...

i'd really really like to hear folks' thoughts on what shoes to pair with shorts. I always love my shorts but have pretty big strong legs, and most shoes make my size 10.5 feet look tiny.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:50 AM) :

love the colours & shadows in the first photo - but yeah the shades are a little too big and roy orbison-esque for his head!

Blogger leather girl said ... (11:58 AM) :

I adore the proportions of L/S on top and shorts on the bottom. For females, I have always loved a L/S top with short shorts, or even just a bikini bottom. The men you've photographed are the male equivalent of this play on proportion. I think you can be semi dressed in shorts as long as you are not wearing them with flip flops (or New Balance sneakers with white tube socks pulled up mid-calf).. but I agree that it might be difficult to feel "properly dressed" in them.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:15 PM) :

I think I would try this look if I found a great pair of trousers (thrift store shopper here) that were too short, then I would have them cropped as shorts. As for the cardigan, agree with the earlier post from a Southern Gent, that is too hot here to wear a cardigan. Have been looking for one in lightweight cotton or cotton/cashmere but no luck yet. I wore a lighweight wool one during winter and received a few compliments. Great outfits, although I am not sure I could wear LV ostrich driving loafers- far too precious for the cobblestones. Blogger Carlene said ... (12:28 PM) :

Guy #1 has on one of those looks that makes me wish I was a guy (but only for a second).

Blogger wideyed said ... (12:43 PM) :

I think the perfect belt in pic#2 adds the 'dressed up' factor.

It's also about dressing up the right pair of shorts. A pair of camo cargo shorts is gonna be darn hard to look dressed up in.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:50 PM) :

men in shorts!!!! There were plenty of them when London was hot last month.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:56 PM) :

where are all the london photos.??

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:21 PM) :

Wow!! The 2nd man is so handsome! I especially love the fit of the entire outfit. It's just perfect!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:06 PM) :

the first man looks very hip, young and American yet he still manages to look dressy with his summer shorts

i really like the overall outfit of the second man and gave me a great idea of pairing greens with blues..i'm not a big fan of epaulettes on jackets but i find them quite interesting on cardigans...like taking a strong element (the epaulette) and adding it on something usually taken as soft and subdued (cardigan)

where can i get those navy shorts?

Blogger Vivek R. said ... (2:27 PM) :

both are excellent looks. I like the green cardigan the best. Also I love the man bag in the first shot.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:33 PM) :

The first guy looks hot. Love the entire outfit. Sunglasses are spot on and that cardigan is fantastic. The second guy, not so sparkling. Looks like he left his clothes in the dryer to long.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:42 PM) :

I really like the second outfit (the green ist great), but I think his cardigan is a bit too small. It looks like he was trying too hard to show his body.

Blogger Unknown said ... (4:33 PM) :

It is perfect for summer and practical also, because sometimes you need the sweater...
I especially like the man in Paris.. handsome. You have to be in good shape and have good legs to look good in it... obviously.

Blogger gabrielazeanadal@hotmail.com said ... (5:39 PM) :

The light in the top picture fascinates me.

Blogger junglesiren said ... (5:42 PM) :

I love men in shorts. I love when men make an effort to look "dressed". I don't love when they "dress" their shorts. It really looks like they're trying too hard and that's doofy to me. Shorts are casual and I think should remain so.

These guys are very stylish and I like the colors, it's just that there is something so Thurston Howel III about it that turns me off.

And shorts with belts don't scream "masculine", hell, they don't even whisper it.

I don't think this is a look many straight men would consider, political correctness notwithstanding. However, Sart, you are clearly a man comfortable with your, em.... less masculine side and I salute you. (hand held high).

Also, dude #1's glasses are too big IMO and if that's a real Goyard then he's a bit of a victim. Okay, I shouldn't say that, they are very well made and will "last forever" but for me, anything that is so obvious isn't attractive or cool, it has a certain "bling" about it. Like "he was rockin' a Goyard!" said with way too much giddiness. In every other way this dude is subtle and that is one thing I like. I bet he's very good looking behind those Rays.

The Wayfarers will be everywhere this summer. Fortunately they come in different sizes so all you gotta do is find the size that fits.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:53 PM) :

The French gentleman is perfection: At once modern and completely of the moment in fashion, and still timelessly stylish. The only thing I'm not fond of are the LV monogramed loafers-- but he's still perfection...

SHORT AND SWEET

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:21 PM) :

the goyard bag tops it all off.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:34 PM) :

to 11:44 anon. regarding shoe swith shorts.

it's pretty apparent that you can't wear visible socks whatsoever. figure that out yourself how to hide them.

but i wear low top canvas converse's usually with my shorts. with cuffed shorts, they have the most uplifting, casual, beach-y flair. i think purcells sometime look too sporty and not very classic. that's not to disrespect purcells i just rather them withe cuffed jeans than shorts. picture 1# actually has it right now that i looka t it. but i think he should have even a half-inch cuff because his shorts almost look like trousers witht he bottoms cut off.

my other option are suede copper lace-ups. with shorts though, sometimes the laces seem foolish and i either take them out entirely or string some thick grass through them for detail. crazy? yes. small price to pay.

sorry for being so precocious, though. and spelling that wrong.

these images tugged at my heartstrings.
i think its a wonderful look on males.

Blogger Sunglasses Guy said ... (3:14 AM) :

Monique,

Are you sure those are Ray Ban's? I mean, they are obviously the Wayfarer shape, but even the largest style of Wayfarer is not that big (I think).

Also, I know the point is photography and fashion, but does someone always know what the products in the pictures are? What I mean is, similar to magazines where they give you a list of the products, can I find a list of these products somewhere?

Blogger * j * said ... (5:25 AM) :

a very casual yet sexy and smart look. love the combination.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:36 AM) :

At Monique, something condescending and upsetting about your post, anyone who still thinks that certain looks are gay or straight should have no place on this blog, I mean really.

As much as I'm one for subtle brands, at times the not so subtle item, branded as it is, just fits. The dude might well had just seen a bag he liked, that you know it costs a small fortune should not matter to you, same with the Vuitton loafers at the bottom: those shoes match the outfit perfectly, notwithstanding the big LV. What do you want him to do, remove the LV?!

Blogger amy said ... (8:29 AM) :

yes, the paris pic is fantastic. he could wear shorts in my town any day! wonderful shot!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:30 AM) :

I really like this look. I'm glad that trim cut shorts are back in style and therefore readily available.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:01 AM) :

LOVE* THE SECOND PHOTO

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:52 AM) :

Well, if the guy in the green sweater is trying too hard to show off his body(per an above poster), he can come over to my neighborhood and strut his stuff. It's finally nice to see men showing some fitted styles. I think both looks are spot on.

Does this mean that the baggy calf length shorts with the big sloppy t-shirt look is finally going away? Is it too early to shout hooray?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:27 PM) :

Jahleel!!!! Je t'adore!!! xx S

Blogger Unknown said ... (1:31 AM) :

sorry, i can only do shorts that fall past or on my knee. some trends just do not work for me.

Blogger Unknown said ... (1:33 AM) :

and also, how can anyone wear a cardigan in 94 degree weather? more power to you, but i would be drenched after walking one block.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:58 PM) :

I love both these photos, both men are gorgeous!!

However, I relly really dislike the shoes in number 2. I can't really explain why, they just look sloppy and too old and crinkly for him and his look. The settings of both photos are beautiful though!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:38 PM) :

I want the second outfit. I want it now. Classy yet comfortable.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:00 PM) :

I wish I knew a man that looked that good in green. Simply gorgeous.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:16 PM) :

Numero Uno is totes fly! WOOOOORK!!!

Blogger PhilM said ... (7:37 PM) :

i love these cardigans. the epaulettes on the green one are a great touch, as is the olive trim on the black cardigan in the first photo. the black cardigan seems to be cut a little too long for my tastes, though; and i would prefer the shoulders to hit his shoulders rather than droop over them. neither are too tight as some posters above have complained. i'm not sure how i feel about the belt with the shorts in the second photo. would like to hear what others think about it.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:40 AM) :

the green cardigan w/ epaulettes is from zara. forty bucks for a cotton/silk blend that looks like it costs four times as much.

Blogger david m. said ... (10:31 PM) :

love the shades in the first shot, the open collar on the gent in the second.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:52 PM) :

Does anyone know where you can get cuffed shorts like the ones in Photo #2? I'm having trouble finding something like them and on a budget too...

Btw, both gents in the pictures are spot on! Nice work, Sart.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:57 PM) :

Okay, so it's Goyard! But I think it looks like he's holding his girlfriend's purse.

Blogger missing_luke said ... (4:59 PM) :

Boy, the neat slim fitting green cardigan and shorts that fit really set off the second chaps look to a tee. Sadly the first guys slightly baggy shorts don't flatter his frame.

We should all champion clothes that fit boys!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:45 AM) :

two style to wear short.
The first picture is more fashion but the second is better my style
