is this like when jeans with holes in them started being popular? i don't know how i feel about this one. a group of my friends have been doing the leggings and tights with runs and holes for a while now and i can't decide. i like the bottom one because it looks totally intentional.
oh, no! girls, please, do not do this. this is not nice.
oh why why why did she have to ruin it with those heinous torn up tights?? she looks so adorable everywhere else! i especially love the blue bow. i would wear everything she has on and switch out the torn up leggings with some new ones.
I can't decide whether or not I find this fashion statement interesting or appalling... Because, while I understand those determinations to break social expectations and create new styles, et cetera, it still seems slightly tacky to parade around in torn hosiery. Perhaps I am a bit old-fashioned?
Anyway, bravo to these ladies for having the audacity that I apparently lack.

I haven't been a fan of this look although i do think the girl in the red plaid skirt does it very well. It looks as if she has distressed her tights with thought and care rather than just accidently laddered them on her way to work. I like her sheer blouse with the sparkly bowtie and her choice of lipstick. Shame she has to hide behind than enormous bag...

I love the look of ripped, stretched, and worn pantyhose. I think they look great, as long as the rest of the outfit looks as far from Courtney Love as you can get.

The guy's jeans are not at all flattering worn that way. It just looks silly, and it doesn't matter how cute he is.
The ripped stockings: From a purely aesthetic and non-objective approach, they are interesting...raw and textural...cocoon-like...simultaneously ugly and beautiful.

This ripped hosiery thing is one (of the many) banes of my existence. I see a girl wearing them and am struck with an overpowering feeling that she doesnt shower or shave, either.
instead i notice that she is really short, with the guy beside she is talking with, as a reference.

Well on paper it's not a look I love but.... these shots are so delightful.
That girl in the plaid skirt is absolutely fantastic form her inky Japanime hair to her of-the-moment sued boots (a stronger color boot - bright blue or green - might have made the ensemble go form fantastic to perfect IMO).
Her fresh, open and sweet face and that bow tie really temper the punk aspects to make her approachable.
I won't be ripping my hose any time soon but if a girl (not a WOMAN) can do it and look that good then she's practically obligated to do it just to bring a little dark sunshine to our lives.
I'd like the shredded effect without the big holes. Someone should manufacture them!

I absolutely adore her outfit. And I like the audacity with which she wears her tights. It is completely up to her how to look, and if she likes it, then good for her. I would still enjoy the outfit more if she had opaque black tights, though.
I have a pair of these I wear to ballet sometimes. Got the tights in 1989, been wearing them ever since. In the ballet studio I think they look awesome, I get compliments (mostly from my male partners). On the street? not so much. Makes me wonder why...
I think it has to do with discipline. In the dance studio the look equates to hard work and starving artistry à la Harvey Edwards.
On the street it just looks louche, the opposite of disciplined.

This is exactly what was on my mind lately. Love your photos, but no love for the tights. I don't get this. At all, not even a little bit. I'm down with Harem pants, black gloss, baloons as skirts, strategically crafted holes in leggins and miscellaneous random acts of lunacy masquerading as individual style, but not this. It's stopped being edgy about 20 years ago if, indeed, that's what young ladies were going for. Bah! The girl is lovely though.

Love the tears. Look how young she is. She can totally get away with this. She *needs* the tears to turn the entire outfit from overly preppy to cuttingly cool. What I may not entirely understand are the pale green boots with it. A forest green would have me drooling.
Jeans as tight as the guy is wearing shouldn't be worn outside of high school or very trendy nights out. If that's a beard I see on him, it doesn't match, nor does an untucked button down. He blows it by trying too hard.

As others have mentioned, I must point out that shredded tights are certainly not a new style invention. They've been around since at least the late 70s, in punk's glory days.
That being said, rock on, girl. Rock on.

Oh, I just love the spirit of this! Really, it's her personality, her smile that is the final complement to the whole look --or style, I should say. It's not a look. It's who she is.

People who say this look is not classy simply do not get it. It is not a look that aspires to be classy and lady-like. It is biker/rock/urban/tough chick aesthetic and I love it. She's cute, and her outfit is, too, but like a lot of other commenters, I am not into the shredded pantyhose look unless perhaps I see it in a Goth club.
I like the ripped tights look but only if it is unintentional? I'm surprised no one has said this yet. To me, ripping your tights intentionally defeats the whole purpose, it makes the outfit look "try-hard".
The only reason I wear ripped tights is because I can't afford to buy a new pair every other day.

She's very cute, and this feels very Material Girl circa 1980 something (at least the tights), but I can't help but think the outfit would have been boosted by some more-interesting and less-tattered hosiery. (Oversized fishnets? Crocheted lace?)

I'm all for ripped tights... but not intentionally ripped tights. But i guess... like someone said, the [contrived] 'style' takes away from them shame some people may experience.

Oh, I hate laddered hose, to me, its not a fashion statement, its a political one- all rather a kind of sinister affectation-very "apocolypse now". My daughter did this in the late 90's. Punk revisited. Not old enough to be vintage. And already done and kind of unhip.

She's like the one cool chic in high-school. You know, the one who knew good music, wore old band t-shirts, cursed and only hung out with guys (but never dated anyone). Yet now, all grown up and moved to the big city, she's doing it on an adult level!
what a bunch of old fogies read this site. it's the texture of the tights that's interesting in these two pics, not whether they are classy or trashy. the attention snags on them. anyway, i bet if they were worn with something black & elegant, many of the people who commented wouldn't be so categorical about hating ripped tights. i think they can be kind of romantic.

Torn tights?! It looks awful. Its like I see her form top to bottom, slowly, and I go "impressing", impressing", "impressing", "oh my God what in Heaven'sname is that" when I come to her tights.
But then, many people seem to like it. Each to his own, makes the statement that style is individualistic :)

I have to disagree with the general opinion here; while I like the concept of the outfit, the teal boots + tartan + royal blue bow tie clash for me, and not in a good way... that and the ripped tights, it's just all a bit mis-matched I think.
The ripped tights have been featured in NYLON mag the music issue in june. When combined with a rockstar attitude, it looks incredible, but for everyday outfit, um, i don't think so.
