your pictures are incredibly inspiring. i truly love those ripped tights !

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:57 AM) :

Blogger TMFA said ... (10:02 AM) :

the guy's style is very nice.
love cheap monday pants, affordable hehe.

the ripped up panties are not my fav.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:16 AM) :

is this like when jeans with holes in them started being popular? i don't know how i feel about this one. a group of my friends have been doing the leggings and tights with runs and holes for a while now and i can't decide. i like the bottom one because it looks totally intentional.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:19 AM) :

oh, no! girls, please, do not do this. this is not nice.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:20 AM) :

oh why why why did she have to ruin it with those heinous torn up tights?? she looks so adorable everywhere else! i especially love the blue bow. i would wear everything she has on and switch out the torn up leggings with some new ones.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:28 AM) :

I can't decide whether or not I find this fashion statement interesting or appalling... Because, while I understand those determinations to break social expectations and create new styles, et cetera, it still seems slightly tacky to parade around in torn hosiery. Perhaps I am a bit old-fashioned?

Anyway, bravo to these ladies for having the audacity that I apparently lack.

Blogger lu said ... (10:29 AM) :

the first photo is absolutely STUNNING. who knew there was a way to make ripped tights look classy?!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:37 AM) :

I haven't been a fan of this look although i do think the girl in the red plaid skirt does it very well. It looks as if she has distressed her tights with thought and care rather than just accidently laddered them on her way to work. I like her sheer blouse with the sparkly bowtie and her choice of lipstick. Shame she has to hide behind than enormous bag...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:40 AM) :

no. nono. just not good. there is nothing classy about ripped tights. it looks just cheap.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:47 AM) :

picking blackberries + nylon hose = snags galore.

Blogger Agnès said ... (10:51 AM) :

At least you don't have to worry about a potential run. Relieves you of the pressure but makes your legs look ugly.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:54 AM) :

yesterday, i wore my tights just the same way like the girl. until i saw this picture, i was not quite sure about my experiment.

guess what i´m wearing now?

thank you for this little supporting allusion.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:01 AM) :

now isn't the first girl just adorable! she hits the nail on the head for me. she looks unintentional; it's a great key to having enviable style. just precious.

Blogger Unknown said ... (11:55 AM) :

I love the look of ripped, stretched, and worn pantyhose. I think they look great, as long as the rest of the outfit looks as far from Courtney Love as you can get.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:55 AM) :

DIY Rodarte! Beauty in the tension.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:02 PM) :

I don't think I'm quite ready to put away my clear nailpolish for tight fixer-uppers.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:09 PM) :

i love the blue tie with this transparent blouse and her hairstyle.
i am undecided with this tights thing too. but it looks interessting with the cuffs

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:24 PM) :

She is beautiful, her style honed, but no no no to the torn hose!

Blogger Unknown said ... (12:25 PM) :

Ripped panties are not my fav but i lover her tartan dress...sure!
X

Blogger Stephanie Clayton said ... (12:29 PM) :

The guy's jeans are not at all flattering worn that way. It just looks silly, and it doesn't matter how cute he is.
The ripped stockings: From a purely aesthetic and non-objective approach, they are interesting...raw and textural...cocoon-like...simultaneously ugly and beautiful.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:40 PM) :

She is adorable. The guy she is talking with needs to pull up his pants.

Blogger twelve.dollar.soup said ... (12:54 PM) :

I think the ripped up tights are sensational, especially given the meticulous nature of the rests of the outfit.

Blogger Barbara said ... (1:12 PM) :

As somebody said in a movie somewhere - "it's a look. Not a great look, but a look". Having said that, the girl in the red plaid skirt is just gorgeous and she'd get away with anything. Even this look...

Blogger perfect bound said ... (1:13 PM) :

She looks like a ton of fun. I admire her bold style including the bright red lips and the torn up tights.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:14 PM) :

love everything about the outfit but the tights!!!

Blogger Jorge from W Palm Beach said ... (1:16 PM) :

This girl is just years behind other entertainers who mastered the art of carefully placed runs. It is not new, it is not a trend. If it matches her personality, I say go for it! But I can't tell from the picture whether it does. Jorge from W Palm Beach

Blogger GJMR said ... (1:18 PM) :

This ripped hosiery thing is one (of the many) banes of my existence. I see a girl wearing them and am struck with an overpowering feeling that she doesnt shower or shave, either.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:20 PM) :

instead i notice that she is really short, with the guy beside she is talking with, as a reference.

Blogger Dominica said ... (1:21 PM) :

very Lily Allen....

Blogger junglesiren said ... (1:29 PM) :

Well on paper it's not a look I love but.... these shots are so delightful.

That girl in the plaid skirt is absolutely fantastic form her inky Japanime hair to her of-the-moment sued boots (a stronger color boot - bright blue or green - might have made the ensemble go form fantastic to perfect IMO).

Her fresh, open and sweet face and that bow tie really temper the punk aspects to make her approachable.

I won't be ripping my hose any time soon but if a girl (not a WOMAN) can do it and look that good then she's practically obligated to do it just to bring a little dark sunshine to our lives.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:46 PM) :

I'd like the shredded effect without the big holes. Someone should manufacture them!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:08 PM) :

Did you mean weak, or is it a play on words?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:12 PM) :

Obvious and brilliant.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:19 PM) :

They did it in the 70s. I guess it's time to do it again...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:26 PM) :

I absolutely adore her outfit. And I like the audacity with which she wears her tights. It is completely up to her how to look, and if she likes it, then good for her. I would still enjoy the outfit more if she had opaque black tights, though.

Blogger Charlotte said ... (2:31 PM) :

I have a pair of these I wear to ballet sometimes. Got the tights in 1989, been wearing them ever since. In the ballet studio I think they look awesome, I get compliments (mostly from my male partners). On the street? not so much. Makes me wonder why...

I think it has to do with discipline. In the dance studio the look equates to hard work and starving artistry à la Harvey Edwards.

On the street it just looks louche, the opposite of disciplined.

Blogger cami falcão said ... (2:32 PM) :

this can be anything but elegant, not for me.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:00 PM) :

Interesting look if you're under 21. Otherwise, not so much.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:02 PM) :

honestly enough with the pigeon-toed stance. it reallllly reallllly bothers me and actually makes me like her outfit less

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:09 PM) :

going about with confidence despite having a run in your stockings is completely different from intentionally wearing a pair of yucky shredded tights. a Definite NO!

Blogger Cameron Adams said ... (3:12 PM) :

Not what is done but how: her ladders subvert the surrounding media circus and complement his stubble and shirttail.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:18 PM) :

This is exactly what was on my mind lately. Love your photos, but no love for the tights. I don't get this. At all, not even a little bit. I'm down with Harem pants, black gloss, baloons as skirts, strategically crafted holes in leggins and miscellaneous random acts of lunacy masquerading as individual style, but not this. It's stopped being edgy about 20 years ago if, indeed, that's what young ladies were going for. Bah! The girl is lovely though.

Blogger Cris Piera said ... (3:29 PM) :

nice way to break "the rules"!

I like the first one better.

I broke my trousers but I don't think I'll break my tights... too dificult to control the damage! :-)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:07 PM) :

"Classy"? That's debatable. But it's certainly a classic look.

"Gabba gabba we accept you, we accept you, one of us"

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:20 PM) :

This takes me back to the riot grrl days of the 90s ... you kind of have to love it.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:42 PM) :

I really don't get this stocking-style but I'm gonna use it as inspiration for my future drawing.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:44 PM) :

Love the tears. Look how young she is. She can totally get away with this. She *needs* the tears to turn the entire outfit from overly preppy to cuttingly cool. What I may not entirely understand are the pale green boots with it. A forest green would have me drooling.

Jeans as tight as the guy is wearing shouldn't be worn outside of high school or very trendy nights out. If that's a beard I see on him, it doesn't match, nor does an untucked button down. He blows it by trying too hard.

Blogger Ame in DC said ... (4:59 PM) :

n-n-n-no.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:13 PM) :

ladders for the boys to climb up!

Blogger Alessandra said ... (5:15 PM) :

Hmmmmm, I like the torn tights. Like it was said, it doesn't look like an accident and it's an interesting way to add more texture to the outfit, especially in the first picture. A little punk chic!

Blogger Brigadeiro said ... (5:15 PM) :

That girl's gorgeous! Love the outfit, although probably sans ripped tights (even though it does funk up an outfit, it's not for me). Maybe the Rodarte tights instead...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:29 PM) :

A nod to Rodarte's tights on the cheap!

Blogger The Clever Pup said ... (5:32 PM) :

I can understand this "it's fun to look cheap" look when the rest of the clothes are in context - but not this.

Blogger The Clever Pup said ... (5:33 PM) :

Maybe it's next year's Halloween Costume - "Banking Intern Hits Hard Times"

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:35 PM) :

Love, love the beautiful Victorianesque moss green boots on the first girl with blue bow. But the second girl, are hipsters naturally born pigeon-toed? This forced pigeon-toe position has to stop.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:41 PM) :

Your style spotting and photos are amazing, there all so unique you have a real eye for it.

i love these tights even though i know i should't! Look really with the tights and boots.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:21 PM) :

She reminds me of Phoebe Cates.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:51 PM) :

she looks so much like jessica alba in the face. i'm liking the tights...i wish people would stop telling me that ripped tights are skanky.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:15 PM) :

The first picture really takes us there, you've captured the moment brilliantly. Love the second as well, thanks!

Blogger Unknown said ... (7:24 PM) :

A miss

Blogger Nicole Then said ... (9:16 PM) :

i love her checkered skirt!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:40 PM) :

This is an old school punk look. I'm sure that, among many others, Vivienne Westood wore them back in the day.
In other words, at this point in time, this is a classic look.

Blogger LC said ... (11:01 PM) :

i love love love that skirt... the classic lumberjack is all i want to wear these days. i can't do the mangled tights but i am able to appreciate them from afar..

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:03 AM) :

As others have mentioned, I must point out that shredded tights are certainly not a new style invention. They've been around since at least the late 70s, in punk's glory days.

That being said, rock on, girl. Rock on.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:12 AM) :

looks like Kenley from projrun.

Blogger Kanani said ... (12:20 AM) :

Oh, I just love the spirit of this! Really, it's her personality, her smile that is the final complement to the whole look --or style, I should say. It's not a look. It's who she is.

Word verification: "eporenc" backwards for C. Nerope, a tailor from the 1920's who specialized in making grey flannel coats for spies.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:40 AM) :

People who say this look is not classy simply do not get it. It is not a look that aspires to be classy and lady-like. It is biker/rock/urban/tough chick aesthetic and I love it. Long live women liberated and audacious enough to wear torn tights. Torn stockings are perfect to kick a%& in during these lean times.

Blogger jensenn said ... (3:00 AM) :

they would make a cute couple.

Blogger Maria said ... (6:55 AM) :

Ripped thights, for me they match perfectly with the economic mood, think about it! They're kinda ecological too.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:38 AM) :

this is another picture that sceams "OH we just dont have money to buy a new pair of tights!"
I think fashion has incredibly always rescued ppl from the shame of having no money.. i think in these new times the shabby look will come back for americans so that they can say "hey we aint poor this just style!"

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:54 AM) :

She is earnestly searching in the universe of her bag for the one thing that might just make the difference in the life of the man that so matters to her right now...a belt!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:23 AM) :

You know, I just love the tight jeans the guy is wearing. So cool, very european style. Cheap Monday jeans are going strong. They are cheap and they look great. Swedish labels, overall, is all fab. I mean, Acne, Filippa K, Cheap Monday, Tiger of sweden, Hope, Whyred they have it all.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:25 PM) :

Hee! This is what happens when Phoebe Cates' character in Fast Times at Ridgemont High goes off to college and gets into Bauhaus and Joy Division and Sisters of Mercy. :)

She's cute, and her outfit is, too, but like a lot of other commenters, I am not into the shredded pantyhose look unless perhaps I see it in a Goth club.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:30 PM) :

I like the ripped tights look but only if it is unintentional? I'm surprised no one has said this yet. To me, ripping your tights intentionally defeats the whole purpose, it makes the outfit look "try-hard".

The only reason I wear ripped tights is because I can't afford to buy a new pair every other day.

Blogger X said ... (2:31 PM) :

i have no idea what is going on with that outfit.

Blogger thwany said ... (3:10 PM) :

love her colors

Blogger Eff Dee Aytche said ... (7:42 PM) :

i think the tights work well for her style of choice...love the guy's style as well

Blogger seawallrunner said ... (10:57 PM) :

no, no and no.

surely there's a 20 in your wallet for a proper pair of hose.

no.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:33 PM) :

She's very cute, and this feels very Material Girl circa 1980 something (at least the tights), but I can't help but think the outfit would have been boosted by some more-interesting and less-tattered hosiery. (Oversized fishnets? Crocheted lace?)

Blogger Kate said ... (8:55 AM) :

She's darling and very well dressed. But those tights absolutely ruin this entire ensemble for me. Meh.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:38 PM) :

interesting outfit. her smile is very warming and make her look like a sweetheart, while her outfit makes her look like a rebel. it's like good girls turn bad. she has some atitude goin', i couldn't pull off those ripped tights but she did. I could go on and on about this picture. Great shot, sart!

Blogger Rachella said ... (5:03 PM) :

Yep - This look was around in the 70s and early 80s.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:03 PM) :

Like Torn jeans, torn tights are a waste of money!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:01 AM) :

Sometimes i just wonder if it's (grunge, shabby...ripped shirts) all too contrived.

I'm all for ripped tights... but not intentionally ripped tights. But i guess... like someone said, the [contrived] 'style' takes away from them shame some people may experience.

I do appreciate it when fashion just accepts

Blogger Maven said ... (9:18 AM) :

Oh, I hate laddered hose, to me, its not a fashion statement, its a political one- all rather a kind of sinister affectation-very "apocolypse now". My daughter did this in the late 90's. Punk revisited. Not old enough to be vintage. And already done and kind of unhip.
boots are cool though-

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:06 PM) :

I think ripped stockings cannot be classy in any way. They're punk. And that's the way they gotta be.And not so many girls can get away with them without looking sloppy.Alice Dellal is one of them ...now that's punk and that's attitude in a cool way. But class is another story.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:47 AM) :

Ripped tights - way to easy. Yawn.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:09 PM) :

Sympa le look collants pleins de trous..magnifique

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:00 PM) :

hayley williams of paramore wore ripped tights at the verizon grammy's party back in february.

ripped OPAQUE tights look good...
these? not so much...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:19 AM) :

that doesn't look good. that just looks existentialistly desperate.

Blogger Jordan Bramlett said ... (6:00 PM) :

She's like the one cool chic in high-school. You know, the one who knew good music, wore old band t-shirts, cursed and only hung out with guys (but never dated anyone). Yet now, all grown up and moved to the big city, she's doing it on an adult level!

Blogger Unknown said ... (3:45 AM) :

what a bunch of old fogies read this site. it's the texture of the tights that's interesting in these two pics, not whether they are classy or trashy. the attention snags on them. anyway, i bet if they were worn with something black & elegant, many of the people who commented wouldn't be so categorical about hating ripped tights. i think they can be kind of romantic.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:02 AM) :

an interesting solution when you run out tights :-)

Blogger "the girl who ate everything and didnt even burp" said ... (7:43 AM) :

Torn tights?! It looks awful. Its like I see her form top to bottom, slowly, and I go "impressing", impressing", "impressing", "oh my God what in Heaven'sname is that" when I come to her tights.

But then, many people seem to like it. Each to his own, makes the statement that style is individualistic :)

Blogger Françoise said ... (11:36 PM) :

hmm, i don't get the torn tights. makes you look like you're trying too hard to be hip and "rockstar-like". it's too "fake" and "affected" for me.

hugs from seattle

Blogger Unknown said ... (7:03 PM) :

Its great when fashion has a sense of humour!

Blogger Pistachio Of Liberty said ... (7:10 PM) :

Wonder if wearing these OVER a vivid color tight wouldn't help take this from simple trend-following to being more of :her: look.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:46 AM) :

fun and wacky. girl in top shot is really cute and having fun! great look.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:51 AM) :

So 1983 !

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:30 AM) :

I have to disagree with the general opinion here; while I like the concept of the outfit, the teal boots + tartan + royal blue bow tie clash for me, and not in a good way... that and the ripped tights, it's just all a bit mis-matched I think.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:06 AM) :

The ripped tights have been featured in NYLON mag the music issue in june. When combined with a rockstar attitude, it looks incredible, but for everyday outfit, um, i don't think so.

Hugs all the way from Malaysia

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:32 PM) :

"fake and affected" that's exactly what i was thinking. this was an interesting fashion statement when real punk rockers roamed the earth in the late 70s early 80s. shouldn't we be trying to break expectations with new trends and new ideas?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:35 AM) :

Beauties. You can tell he loves the tights and it totally impressed by that girls style and beautiful smile.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:52 AM) :

OMG! It's Phoebe Cates circa 1985!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:05 PM) :

oh oh oh
i love this look so very much
especially the bottom ones
WOW this is style and innovation at its height

Blogger Unknown said ... (1:01 AM) :

why can't i get my tights to do that?

Blogger Karina Cifuentes said ... (12:12 PM) :

Stockings are very Rodarte inspired...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:59 PM) :

I wore tights like these in the past. It did not go so well! It was obvious that everyone was giving me dirty looks. Some even asked what had happened to my tights!
