Lovely slim lines.

Blogger Sartorial Vancouver said ... (6:04 PM) :

A reference to the two-toned outfit?

A colored belt would have killed it.

one comment says "his", another says "she's"... id say you nailed it with "aussie androgyny." great look.

Anonymous downunderboy said ... (7:06 PM) :

YO! Sartorial Vancouver...she/he's wearing a red belt!

LOVE IT!!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:06 PM) :

I love that one person thought this was a male, and another thought this was a female! It truly is an androgynous look! While I'm under the impression that this is a male, it totally doesn't matter as far as the look goes. Everything from head to toe works for either sex. So simple and totally classy.

Blogger diane said ... (7:08 PM) :

This photo blows my mind. The lines of the wall, the lines of the bricks, the exquisite lines of the clothing, and his hair. Wow.

These photos make me proud to be a Sydney-sider! Q:Are these people Australian? Or are they visitors for Fashion Week????

Anonymous Alex said ... (7:56 PM) :

heres whats interesting abt this pic- i cant tell if it's a guy or girl, but more imoprtantly, i dont care.

as a guy, id wear any of the stuff this person is wearing regardless of their gender. thats what makes this an amazing photo. one of ur best! this blog is inspiring!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:58 PM) :

i love love love this look!!!!!

Blogger THE DAY AFTER YOU DIE said ... (8:09 PM) :

Velvet keds?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:19 PM) :

is it only skinny people who are fashionable? or do clothes look better on them?

wondering reader

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:30 PM) :

I really love this outfit, looks like something i could wear! Good combination.

Blogger Nikki - - Monomestile - - said ... (8:32 PM) :

So no idea whether this is a girl or a guy but that just makes it better. Not even kidding, either way I think this person is very sexy. And the way the hair has a profile up against the wall is so intense. Love it.

Blogger Rache_Xx said ... (9:16 PM) :

How can you be confused of the gender, she is gorgeous! Bring her to Melb... What a great photo, well done!

Anonymous an said ... (9:26 PM) :

the hair, the ensemble, the flat figure, and the pose scream "he", but if you look closely, their facial features are distinctly female.
i vote "she"!
also, i like how the camera also serves as an accessory in place of a bag.

Blogger CAPITAL THREAD said ... (9:27 PM) :

Nice... super good idea to do a profile shot, love the camera like a handbag...

Blogger Style Scientist said ... (9:35 PM) :

I thought it's a he because of the flat chest, but it could be a she with a super flat chest 0-o

Blogger fickle red riding hood said ... (9:42 PM) :

pretty sure it's a lady, still can't believe you're in sydney. you should stay here.

Anonymous bighan said ... (9:52 PM) :

love the added definition of the arm with the tight black tee underneath. I think that's what really emphasizes this look and also enhances the shot. the body line is almost as straight as the one on the wall!! love it.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:54 PM) :

so which is it? A beautifully photographed man...or woman?

Blogger Gabrielle said ... (9:59 PM) :

Melbourne do it better!

x

Blogger Holden said ... (10:05 PM) :

this person is beautiful and i am in love.

Anonymous princess glee said ... (10:28 PM) :

My, what long feet you have.
He's all skinny and cute in all his black and white. Nice.

Blogger Therese said ... (10:35 PM) :

He is definitely a guy because of the body. It is the nose, small lips, chin and hair that makes him look like a girl. He has a flat chest, protruding brow bones, strong forearms and a high square forehead.

Anonymous fashion lady said ... (10:36 PM) :

impressive!!

Blogger Kent Johnson said ... (11:02 PM) :

This is such a Sydney look. If you went off to the Opera in the evening you find plenty of men wearing Black Tee-shirts and pants. Super casual.

For better or worse you are really capturing the real Sydney! Great to see contrast with OS.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:12 PM) :

SHE is amazing.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:14 PM) :

the shoe size gives it away I think.

Blogger Ron said ... (11:16 PM) :

The REALLY interesting thing about this shot is to view it with the idea of the rule of thirds in mind. Intellectually, divide the young man's image into thirds.
- Top of the head to the bottom of the t-shirt sleeve.
- Edge of the t-shirt sleeve to the curl of the fingers into the pants pockets.
- Edge of the pockets to the soles of the shoes.

It's all perfectly cut and perfectly crisp.

Bravo .

Blogger Anastasia said ... (11:23 PM) :

Hey Sart
a girl for sure!!
hope you can make it to inner Sydney suburbs of Newtown/Enmore for more great street style or even the harbour suburb of Balmain to see a totally different view?

Anonymous Theresa Tseung said ... (11:28 PM) :

Absolutely loving it.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:29 PM) :

love your latest pictures! i feel like your style of photography has changed a LITTLE bit...not for the worst!:) you inspire me to dress, design, and aspire to do what i wanna do!!!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:48 PM) :

I saw this girl backstage at most of the fashion shows this week. She was really lovely and had a super cool, edgy look every day. Very pretty without a skerrick of makeup.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:48 PM) :

definitely a guy, look at his large forearms, a girl that skinny would have much slimmer arms.. but great photo none the less

Blogger nollyposh said ... (11:49 PM) :

*Just heard your interview on the ABC radio in Melbourne ~Fabulous~ i am a new fan X:-)

Anonymous sudindienne said ... (11:55 PM) :

How does this represent Sydney or Australia? He looks like he could be on any street corner in New York or Europe. You seem to be searching for people who look similar to what you're used to. Same comments for the girls in heels. I was recently in Australia and if you look at most of the retail fashion, i.e. the Aussie-owned brands that sell in Australia to Aussies - they are significantly different than what we get here in NYC or Europe.

Anonymous mimi said ... (12:10 AM) :

hmm. im a bit underwhelmed except for the fact i cant figure out this person's gender (but either way, he or she would be nicely dressed). surely there are much better dressed people at RAFW??

a quick question (which you may not want to answer, id understand!) but how come you're pictures have a "darker tone" about them. im not too sure about the weather in sydney, but im just surprised they are not brighter or have more light in them.

is it a reflection of your take on the fashion? or is it the weather? or do you simply like these darker tones?

Blogger wrinkledcabbage said ... (12:22 AM) :

i love this... it's so unaffected yet stylish, and everything about the outfit, the scarf and the shades and even the camera hanging from the shoulder, gives it character. WOW.

Blogger TMFA said ... (12:37 AM) :

Is that a canon eos 5d on his shoulder?

Blogger nollyposh said ... (12:49 AM) :

(Ps) Just read and ~loved~ the post about your dad... Kindest Sympathies to you and btw the story was just as beautiful as the photos X:-)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:06 AM) :

Many androgynous females bind their chests to appear more masculine. Not saying she is doing this here but it is a possibility. She is definitely a she. Thanks for this photo!

Blogger Karly said ... (1:29 AM) :

amazing!

Blogger Hanna Persson said ... (1:31 AM) :

I don't care if it's a boy or a girl, it's a great look either way!

Blogger Sweetface McGee said ... (3:49 AM) :

fyi - this is definitely a girl, she's a friend of a friend. Her name is Soraya (that is probably mis-spelled).

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:54 AM) :

He's a nice friend.

Anonymous patricia said ... (4:55 AM) :

@Sudindienne, I'm a Sydneysider and I disagree- I think this is representative of the indie crowd in Syndey and sure, it is pretty much the same as the indie crowd everywhere else (from what I've seen!).

Anonymous benconservato said ... (5:02 AM) :

It is probably "dark" out because our weather has been very changable here in Sydney, not dark on my Mac, anyway, great shot.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:54 AM) :

Blogger Anthony Burke said ... (7:53 AM) :

Are the jeans velvet....hard to tell, but love this type of outfit on a day when you just don't know which way the weather will go. No jacket to bother with, but the scarf keeps you toasty!

Blogger Genna said ... (8:00 AM) :

i feel bad if im wrong but i instantly thought it was a boy , (he) has soft features though and a wonderful sense of style.. yay for australia!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:03 AM) :

Perhaps the subject is part of the Japanese cultural movement called Kei which argues that gender is irrelevant, revels in true androgyny and in secret identities.

Whatever the case, it's a captivating photo of a strong personality.

Blogger mel bomba said ... (8:11 AM) :

Hot debate, she or he, who cares you're finally down under!!

Anonymous Antidepresant Tips - Daily Survivor Guide said ... (8:27 AM) :

Wow!

That is actually a girl.

Sorry I was preparint to say something like not my favorite for boys (like me).

But now, I think she looks nice.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:51 AM) :

A classic white tee.....forever!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:57 AM) :

i love this!!! and its a he, in my opinion. look at the arms, and hands.

Blogger Unknown said ... (9:10 AM) :

Love this

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:38 AM) :

SHE has a cool look. I especially like her shoes here. Actually, she reminds me of a woman I know who has the height and build to pull off menswear with ease, something I could never do.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:40 AM) :

Still not sure if it's a boy or a girl...maybe we should check "down under"...:)

Anonymous Alex said ... (11:35 AM) :

I don't care if this is a boy or a girl. I like that cheeks, they are kind of Johnny Depp, but to be honest, the style is just provincial. Nothing gripping nor classic or new.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:29 PM) :

Androgyny is a fashion topic on campus right now. however, none are as chic as this person. I would only ask that the pants come up from under the ass.

Blogger KONSHONCHLOE said ... (1:39 PM) :

Blogger Allen - East Hampton said ... (4:03 PM) :

Whatever the gender, this subject clearly understands how to make slim pants work - heads and shoulders over all those thom browne clones.

Blogger WAMP-NATION said ... (4:09 PM) :

they do harbor the best looking lesbians in the world in syndey....swoon

Blogger Alexandria ♥ said ... (5:17 PM) :

I'm good with this look/style...shades to shoes to camera, jewelry, etc. whatever the gender.

Anonymous Rachel said ... (7:40 PM) :

Gaah I love everything about this. The photo itself, the clothes...and the subject. Hahaha.

Anonymous Lotte said ... (4:00 PM) :

Blogger Francie said ... (9:23 PM) :

you should come to Toronto! this is the dominant aesthetic. Love the shoes, the posture, and the multi-directional lines.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:44 PM) :

not a fan.
its average.
however the fit of the pants/jeans is very good.
can some ppl explain to me wats with wearing a t-shirt with a scarf? i dont see how it is practical to do so. u keep ur neck warm, but wat about the rest of ur body? to me it makes more sense to have some long sleeve stuff on before the scarf comes into play

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:15 AM) :

This is the most Sydney out of the lot!

Blogger Joy Mars said ... (12:57 PM) :

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:03 PM) :

Blogger doingtheunstuck said ... (5:09 PM) :

wow. reminds me of my grade school crush on actor Edward Furlong...though I'm guessing this is the female version :) Love the sleeve combo and the hair. So sexy.

Blogger Alexis said ... (11:04 PM) :

i keep thinking about this pic, randomly thru out the day.
love it. love her look. i'd switch teams for her.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:32 AM) :

In Sydney, as soon as it gets a bit cooler than usual, people will grab a scarf before grabbing a jumper. You'll see lots of people in short sleaves with a scarf, specially this time of year for season change.

Anonymous wearability.us said ... (3:33 AM) :

this is probably one of my favorite shots... i love the contrast and the profile.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:07 AM) :

If the person is male, then he has unusually soft features. If the subject is female, then she has, by far, the flattest chest I have ever seen. Nice look though.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:27 AM) :

i love the look of how he ties his scarf but i can't tell exactly how he did it from the angle. any idea?

Anonymous jiggie smalls said ... (1:50 PM) :

I like the shoes , someone know the brand ?

Blogger Kassiani said ... (9:43 PM) :

Lovely shot, Mr Sart, and gorgeous subject. Still can't figure out if it's a guy or girl. That's the beauty of androgyny, I guess.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:06 PM) :

Ho hum. Looks like any other Cotton On kid.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:43 AM) :

if your all looking for some saucy info... its a girl and her girlfriend is n garance dore's blog as aussie grunge!!!

Blogger ... said ... (12:12 PM) :

Haha!! Classic Inner West Girl =) The layered monochromatic tees, the slim pants topped with spikey hair. THIS is a quintessential Sydney look.

Anonymous ladycrush said ... (12:48 AM) :

at first glance would be easy to assume she's a boy because of the clothing,& superstreamlined silhouette, but the title "androgyny" obviously refers to the fact she's a woman.. a very sharp & sexy one at that! She's a good example of that cool relaxed style typical of Sydney, where what is valued/admired is not what labels or "must have" items are worn, but how the mix comes together...a few old, some new, some cheap, some expensive, acknowlegding what's going on in the fashion world but not being a slave to it.

Anonymous jbozak said ... (12:21 PM) :

Rock-solid cool. Androgyny never looked so tough.

Blogger SIX WOLVES said ... (1:25 AM) :

COOL KID represented by Six Wolves. www.sixwolves.com

Anonymous CallmeRay said ... (12:55 AM) :

Hi Sartorialist.

It's Aussie Androgyny here. Thought I would make a comment about my own picture to let you know I am thoroughly enjoying the debate as to my gender.

I am tempted to give the game away, but that would spoil all the fun!

Anyway, enjoy your time here in Australia and while I was around during Fashion Week, I took some photos myself...with the camera over my shoulder in your picture.

Jiggie smalls: yes I'd also like to know the brand of the shoes, any ideas anyone?
I've been looking for a descent pair of black pumps for ages, but everything I've seen is just trash compaired to these!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:33 AM) :

So, if this is a girl, and she can look so cool dressed essentially like a guy, can a guy dressed like a girl (with the same is it a guy/is it a girl questions being raised) be equally cool?

Love your blog

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:01 AM) :
