Such a beautiful photo, the sky, the waves, the positioning, the focus, the saturation... but fashion-wise I don't see anything special.

would Coco approve?

Blogger miss sophie said ... (9:43 AM) :

leave it to you, scott, to find the one shot of a swimsuit-on-the-beach that's haute Baywatch.

i love how her one-piece gives off almost a Rick Owens/drkshdw vibe...very cool contrast to the rest of the beachwear out there!

Blogger Alexandra said ... (9:44 AM) :

She's so beautiful! I love how the saturation shows off her gorgeous freckles...very beautiful shot indeed.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:52 AM) :

Great, athletic is in, no more smoking! (coming from an ex-smoker)

Anonymous SallyO said ... (9:53 AM) :

How on earth can you people tell she's wearing Chanel? All I see is a black blob of shirt. I like it, though, as it is very un-bathing-suit. Is it a one-shoulder garment (like Wilma Flintstone) or is it just that one side is slipping down? Very interesting!

Anonymous sasha said ... (10:05 AM) :

This reminds me a LOT of Narelle Autio - the saturation, the movement, and of course the setting.
One of my favourite photographers, check her out!

You take amazing pictures, I love your blog

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:14 AM) :

Is this the same Sydney as the shot a couple of days ago, "Sydney Winter"? If so, either the bundled-up guy or the bathing beauty is exaggerating. I can imagine temperatures bouncing around, but not that much.

Blogger Penny Lane said ... (10:17 AM) :

Bondi and Chanel--what's not to love?! Great shot, the action, color and tilt of the horizon.

Enjoy every sparkling moment of Down Under. I look forward to more marvelous photos of this magical land.

Blogger Scott said ... (1:07 PM) :

"though i like the image, i think its very posed..."

Of course it's posed: wouldn't it be creepy if the Sartorialist hung out at beaches behind bushes?

A great image, I'd love to see the texture up close.

Anonymous Mighty Mig said ... (3:37 PM) :

Ah...so this was the beach shot you were talking about on Sunday night!! I love the crashing waves in the background and her facial expression. She seems unfazed by it all. Focused. Determined. Confident.

Totally different from your usual shots but it still has the elements of your distinct eye for beauty. It's sexy without being too cheesy/cliched. Poetry in motion! There's a wonderful story behind this guys. I can't wait to read about the full story in your book.

Thank you for sharing your passion with us on Sunday night and almost every night.

I hope you and Ms G have a safe trip back to NYC and take all the great Oz memories with you when you leave.

Ok - time for an explanation of our weather. It seems you Northern Hemispherics are a little confused.

It is Autumn here.

It is cold on some days (about 62 F) and warmer on others (say, 72).

The ocean temperature, however, is warmer now than during most of Summer (66 F).

The beauty of Sydney in Autumn is that it's possible to be in shearling ankle boots one day and sandals the next...

Anonymous suzanne nelson said ... (7:16 AM) :

Sart, i think this is one of your best photos ever - the composition, light, colours, textures are all superb. i also feel it has a very distinct photographic style that is more and more evident in your work. For me the background has retro overtones yet the subject is resolutely modern and vital. I love what she is wearing and how it falls and adheres to the body - it's a great piece - but because the photo is taken by you it could just as easily be by The Gap as Chanel, it's not the label that matters but how it's worn , the attitude etc.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:03 AM) :

It looks contrived. Sorry.

Blogger Unknown said ... (8:26 AM) :

Hats:
What's with the degrees F? I think there's just one country that uses those... In Australia we use the global centigrade (celsius) system.

And my cool tip is, 16C = 61F. Just flip the digits.

Anonymous Jen said ... (12:13 PM) :

Hmm, would you have taken this girl's pic if it wasn't for the Chanel tank? I don't think high-end fashion equals style. But that's just my opinion. Sometimes I feel all it takes to be a good dresser on here is to wear expensive clothes. And I find this pic is very unflattering for the otherwise very pretty girl (the "swimsuit" looks strange, as if she had hanging boobs down to her belly, on closer inspection you can tell it's a tee, but still: first impression, not so good).

Thanks, I think, for capturing the light and a little of the spirit of my home town, Sydney. I can't help but think you were caught in a fashion week bubble, by the harbour (what better bubble to be in!, oh we poor mortals). Next time venture to Bellevue Hill, Balgowlah, Bungan, for some really eclectic Sydney style - I'm talking vintage pucci, jenny kee, ken done, mixed with mambo, sase & bide and attitude. If you are in Jakarta, Ill show you the same. Love your work!

Blogger Laurence John said ... (5:27 AM) :

it looks stagey...it would have been much stronger if you'd shot her standing still looking at camera (i.e. what you usually do) instead of trying to look like an action shot. also, the entire right hand side of the shot isn't interesting enough to take up all that room.

I saw you approach this girl on your television interview on SBS. I thought it was an odd choice, given she was just sunbaking in a tanktop, but it is amazing to see the result. Sydney's architecture, shoreline and shoulders (see Max Dupain's shoulders on Bondi sands) are captured in one shot!

Last time I checked this is the Sartorialist, not the Fashionista.

Love it Mr S.

Clearly, It Ain't What You Do, It's The Way You Do It applies to both the residents and visitors of Sydney.

Blogger Jennie Lynn said ... (8:05 PM) :

This image is beautiful. She has such a wonderfully fresh face, and she totally works the Chanel.

Anonymous Hat said ... (9:12 PM) :

Good little tip, Martin.

I was using the Fahrenheit system to communicate with our American sartorial friends.

I too am Australian (and Sydneyian)...

Also, the 'colour story, sydney' shot above this one is my all time favourite. Sums us my Sydney & all that I love about it. Thank you Mr Schuman.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:12 PM) :

First of all, I love the composition of this photo. And in response to someone who commented and said, "Sometimes I feel all it takes to be a good dresser on here is to wear expensive clothes." This is simply not the case. For this photo, I believe it is more about the setting and the context... seeing an oversized Chanel tee draped over a gorgeous woman on an Australian beach brings this sense of fashion irony-- as if even though she is far from the Parisian atelier, she is still able to channel a sense of effortless personal style in a natural setting. The style here is about a slight touch of subtle intention. Beautiful work as always, Scott. I always love a visit to your blog and to see what you have discovered in your travels!

Blogger elegancemaison said ... (4:47 PM) :

This is my daughter's backyard with Icebergs club in the background, though I live 12,000 miles away I ache for this view. All the elements of your composition are so lovely - the natural girl, her casual windblown (but designer) shirt, the 'bitey' grey waves and the searing blue sky on a warm Sydney autumn day. Wish I was there.

Anonymous m.edwin said ... (11:55 PM) :

Anonymous moremony services said ... (1:11 PM) :

A very good swimsuit, or should I say swimming dress? Background is very pretty. Good job Mr. Sartorialist :)

Anonymous nolongerloyal said ... (11:32 AM) :

/written after reading Mighty Mig's and w.edwin's comments/

why do you no longer share the stories behind your photographs on the blog? your commentary and insight were the main reasons i read this everyday. while your photography alone is stunning, i miss the stories that made it interesting and personal and more than just a gallery for your photographs.

(and @SallyO: it says Chanel on the shirt/suit/thing... it took me a while to see it too)
