Why Can't I Buy Gloves Right Now?

It has been snowing all day today....and yet, I can't buy a pair of gloves in New York City.

There's something wrong with this system.

It seems super ridiculous that the shops are full of Spring merchandise right now.

Do you really want to be buying shorts in this weather?

Mon cher Scott, une très belle photo!!

Blogger Unknown said ... (3:01 PM) :

That's indeed pretty strange.Seems like you missed the sales.I bought several pairs of black h&m knit gloves for very little money. They do pretty well, and I dont have to be afraid of losing them.
Still,a pair of great fitting leather gloves in black is one of my unfullfilled style-dreams.

Blogger the adventure mouse said ... (3:04 PM) :

worse: do you really want to see your wintery self in said shorts right now?

That is so funny, I tried to buy gloves the other day because it is so cold, but I was turned down. I don't care if spring stuff is out, it's 27 degrees outside. Love the blog too, very cool

Blogger BienvenidoaDespues said ... (3:07 PM) :

try the street vendors. somehow, they know exactly what you need more than anything, convenience, especially in this kind of weather. and they'll sell it with a smile -- now that's style!

Anonymous vig' said ... (3:07 PM) :

haha
I soooo completely agree...
Same thing in Montréal, a big non-sense when we still have very cold days to come!
;) good gloveshunt!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:09 PM) :

Very 'cool' shot ;)

Totally empathize with your gloves issue.

Stay warm!

Anonymous greybreaks said ... (3:10 PM) :

great photo. love the pop of red from the soles of the shoes.

good luck with your glove search.

Blogger Journey said ... (3:10 PM) :

La Crezia in Grand Central Station is great for beautiful simple cashmere gloves.

Also, street vendors are always a great source for current seasonal accessories. There finds will not be glamorous, but they are warm and functional. Two out of 3 forms in fashion qualify as a find in my book. Especially when frozen hands are a factor!

Pop of the infamous "Red". Scenery stunning.....

Blogger Unknown said ... (3:16 PM) :

Honestly do you really want to be selling shorts in this weather.
My store location is in Sweden!!! and I´m getting box after box full of spring/summer styles that I ordered in August´09.
This is really frustrating from a shop owners point of view but what can I do?
Thank you for bringing this up and thank you for all your wonderful work.

Blogger Unknown said ... (3:16 PM) :

I 100% totally agree. I'm in the DC area and I feel the same way. I also was looking to buy gloves and had to settle on the last pair in stock my local BR. Makes no sense that winter clothing is hard to come by when it's still winter.

Blogger Carina said ... (3:16 PM) :

that's why fall fashion shows should be in the fall and spring fashion shows in the spring (spring being the same time that the winter olympics are on)

It would be better for everybody, really, when you think about it. But that's another story for another day

Blogger Laura Trevey said ... (3:18 PM) :

I've been freezing all day long... is spring around the corner?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:19 PM) :

Blogger barcelonina exiliada said ... (3:20 PM) :

I totally agree with you. it's ridiculous to try to make us buy winter sweaters in September and sheer blouses in February... By the way, when I see women with almost no clothes in this weather because they think it's sexy I find it pityful. People that look cold and unconfortable are the epithome of none-elegance!

Blogger mph said ... (3:22 PM) :

I totally agree with you. I understand some have the luxury of shopping ahead of the season and planning their wardrobe but those are few and latter way of life is a generation passed. And even if one doesn't agree with that statement, consider the current economic state. Buyers should really look at their customer and their climate. Snow in February is NOT A SURPRISE.

Anonymous T H E F A T T A C K said ... (3:22 PM) :

Tell me about it.

I got in from Asia in the third week of January and have been unable to find a single decent peacoat for the last 3 weeks.

As for the gloves, Century 21 was able to solve my dilemma. I know it's a crazy place, but you can't go wrong with basic tan leather gloves.

Anonymous Leia said ... (3:24 PM) :

That is ridiculous. Spring fashion should be put on hold till at least March. I hope you find a pair of gloves soon!

I was thinking the same thing two days ago!

This is utter madness. If you don't buy your winter coat by the end of June, you won't get one because in September there's nothing left anywhere (except in XXXL and XXS).

I still have no idea why this system is in place.

Anonymous Maija said ... (3:38 PM) :

I guess for the same reason there's now summer jobs free and available for hunting in February. The phenomenon is so today, but quite awful, actually, to us dreamer-types.

It's tiring to constantly be on the know of one's moves for the following so and so months. But as said, it's how we/things function nowadays.

Keep alert ;)

Blogger picolin said ... (3:39 PM) :

Yes... oh well, I bought 10S/S clothes in December when I was in Tokyo. I usually grab my winter gadgets at post-Christmas sale. If we miss that, that's it. Very strange indeed.

Jack's 99 cent store on 32nd, between 6th and 7th, sell black fleece gloves for 99 cents. Shocking I know! I loose like 10 prs of gloves by the time Spring rolls in so couple of years ago, I wised up and bought 15 prs at Jack's. It's very warm and it's black and 99 cents each. Can't go wrong with that!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:40 PM) :

Scott you are totally correct.. What is wrong with system...

I went shopping last week as well, and its been cold in SF... all the shops were filled with leftover sales rack of winter goodies and all the regular priced merchandise was for spring/summer...

knowing SF we still got a few more months of cold/moderate weather...

whats going on with the shops and there buyers? its like they have gotten rid of all of there fall stuff already and expect us to buy shorts and tee's from now on...

as a former buyer, shed some light on how these buyer's buy...

thats another problem with fashion nowadays, buyers are terrible for most of the stores... just terrible...

Blogger Laura said ... (4:41 PM) :

I agree..it's really too cold!!!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:41 PM) :

It's the same problem if you want to buy a bathing suit in the summer. All winter clothes.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:41 PM) :

Retailers have had a pretty heavy winter, and most of the east coast storms so far this year were record breakers. Every single person in the country at some point or another had to invest in winter gear that may have never had to do so before. It's a simple matter of supply and demand. People are not going to go out and buy winter gear in March so they have to prepare ahead of time - their orders are done well before winter, so it's hard to estimate the fact that most of the east coast would see 50+ inches of snow - not seen since the 1800's!!

Blogger Mack said ... (4:44 PM) :

the key is to shop in the little corner stores. yesterday i went everywhere from bloomingdale's and macy's to h&m trying to find gloves and we finally found a bodega with hundreds of pairs for sale right outside the subway. try the guys who sell luggage on 14th near 7th.

We're even more messed up in Los Angeles because our seasons run late. It's cold and foggy in June and beautiful and warm in October. The up side to this is that when you do want shorts in July, they're on sale. Also, I am looking at the fall RTW fashion shows, knowing that if I buy something fallish now, I can wear it until July.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:54 PM) :

I just saw this photo on greedy girl. the shoes make it perfect. one of my favourite shots from this site.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:55 PM) :

This is where mom-and-pop shops should be thriving against department stores and other big chains that operate from faraway corporations using spreadsheets: by keeping seasonal items on the streets through the season!

For instance, in Austin, TX, where river-tubing is the most popular thing to do from May through September, they yank ALL summer stuff off the shelves after July 4 in preparation for back-to-school clothes. Never mind if you need another bathing suit, new tube or anything summery. Now it's freezing and the stores are selling spring clothes when no one has enough warm clothes. I don't know why smaller retailers don't fill this niche!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:57 PM) :

Hate to say it, but Century 21 may be your best bet. I was there two weeks ago and they had amazing leather and cashmere gloves on sale for around the $100 mark.

...but on the plus side, all of the winter wear is on sale :-)

I had the EXACT same problem last week when we were hit with a snowstorm in Texas - not to mention the temperatures have not risen above freezing in months. My boyfriend got a ridiculously long rant from me regarding the silliness of fashion seasons being way too premature.

I don't even want to think about bathing suits... I JUST NEED TO REPLACE MY GLOVES!!

Ah... one year I had to frantically search every store in town to find gloves, a hat, long underwear, etc. because I didn't own any of those things and was heading to a snowstorm. But, we lived in Arizona and it was January. Last year - no snow boots in my size by December 1st! What the..?!

Why on earth do you not want to buy bathing suits and shorts right now? I mean, really.

Blogger P.Gaye Tapp at Little Augury said ... (6:29 PM) :

snow makes the most beautiful pictures, and yes there is something terribly wrong that ones fingers must freeze in Feb, especially yours.

Blogger Ljubica said ... (6:29 PM) :

I've always hated that about this time of year - it's freezing outside and yet i'm being lured into buying tank tops, bikinis and short shorts that you won't be able to wear in the next 5 months unless you book yourself a one way ticket down south

Thanks for catching that I wrote "by" instead of "buy"

My fingers were too cold to type right.

GORGEOUS shot

I wound up in Denver late one March to attend an unexpected funeral. on my way from one coast to the other

it was so snowy & cold and I had nothing nice & warm to wear; shopping and trying to find a suitable coat was ridiculous. I wound up buying a cheap pashmina from a cart

Once in a week, I just check your blog, and I never stop wondering about it. Maybe one day, you'll publish an album + a book.I will be the first buyer.

Sorry for being such a Grammar Nazi (this is the self-proclaimed callous bastard) but they just catch my eyes sometimes. On a more relevant note, I've only just begun to follow your blog and really appreciate what you are bringing to the table. This photograph is amazing and shows the extreme lengths that humans are capable of going to in order to remain looking "fashionable." Tights and heels in a blizzard? Kudos.

Blogger Unknown said ... (6:54 PM) :

Love the shot - and the look.

If little red riding hood grew up and moved to NYC...

Anonymous Coco said ... (7:02 PM) :

Go to Saks! They carry Italian leather gloves lined with cashmere.

Blogger Ashley Reese said ... (7:02 PM) :

Beautiful photo. I don't get how people can walk in that weather with those shoes on though. It's asking for a broken ankle.

Blogger abigail said ... (7:03 PM) :

tried to buy pants for skiing this past weekend and was told, "skiing season is over." in February. when it was 20º and snowing outside.

The system is screwy.

Blogger Liz said ... (7:09 PM) :

I know exactly what you mean! It was freezing all of January and I couldn't find earmuffs anywhere! Little did I know, a little trip to Williamsburg solved my problem. Found in a little boutique. You should try! Good luck!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:21 PM) :

She looks great even if not dressed for the weather. Maybe she got caught by surprise? There's something Ukiyo-e about this photo...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:22 PM) :

Don't forget chinatown, not every vendor down there is trying to sell knock offs or even so called name brand!
As far as fall clothes shown the previous spring and vice versa, its ridiculous but its the status quo, and people do buy it up because most of the cute clothes for spring are gone after late March!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:23 PM) :

How do you think we feel in Los Angeles when it's 87 degrees and the shop are all pushing down parkas? The Polo Store looks like it belongs in Bangor Maine, trying to sell me five layers of wool. Palm trees, palm trees.

Blogger renata said ... (7:24 PM) :

i agree... its hard to find some nice gloves to buy. i had the same problem a month ago and the stores already had springs clothes. got at jcrew. try to buy online.

Anonymous Gene Wicker Jr said ... (7:25 PM) :

The red sole shoes make this shot for me. Such a great photograph... a brave woman for wearing those heels in that kind of weather.

Blogger Mónica said ... (7:26 PM) :

Same thing happens in London!
It's ridiculous...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:54 PM) :

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:59 PM) :

I wish I could find shorts! It seems that California is stuck with all the winter clothes when here it's summer weather. How ironic.

Blogger Marixxa said ... (8:03 PM) :

Blogger glgn said ... (8:06 PM) :

use ur old pair

Blogger lucitebox said ... (8:09 PM) :

I go through this nearly every year because I wear out my winter goods. I'm a dog walker on the street everyday and in Chicago winter. I'm shoving the stuff in pockets, messenger bag, etc. By Feb., my stuff looks ragged. Right now, I want more than anything to buy a new winter hat that I like, but I won't be able to buy one until July! That's the other issue--who buys winter gear during Summer?!

Fab photo!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:13 PM) :

So true but the same can be said of summer. Ever try and buy a swim suit in august?

Blogger CW said ... (8:13 PM) :

An interesting chador.

In a pinch, get gloves at one of the shops in GCT, or insulated work gloves from a hardware store.

Anonymous Kari said ... (8:14 PM) :

Ha Marie, NYC in Louboutins... not the worst "beaten path" a girl could come across.

Blogger Crystal said ... (8:16 PM) :

I learned this the hard way two years ago when I lost my gloves in February and couldn't find a pair in any of the stores. I made it a point this and last year to buy an extra pair at the beginning of the season just in case!

But if you can wait a day or two there is always online. :)

Blogger BobKentNoVa said ... (8:31 PM) :

Scott, If you can make do with utilitarian-but-warm gloves, try a hardware store or an Army/Navy surplus store. The seasonality of their merchandise stock is more in synch with reality than that of traditional clothing retailers.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:36 PM) :

What a fantastical, beautiful, mysterious, mystical photo!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:36 PM) :

well...why don't you go to a gloves store???
Sermoneta on Madison Ave may be??!!!

I hate how everywhere you look stores are pushing spring merchandise so much. It's ridiculous. But if you look hard enough most winter stuff is on sale now. At least that's what happened to me!

That being said, this image has great iconic potential. I love everything about it. Whoever she is, she's got major style.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:47 PM) :

Well said. I work in retail and it's nuts! One cannot appreciate the season we are living right now as it is: You must buy winter gloves in August and shorts in February. NON SENSE!!!!! How not to leave your gloves around? Well, take mental notes: I memorize my belongs and my actions as stickies in my mind. It works! I use to leave everything everywhere until the day I left my front door OPEN! Never again! I swore memorize my actions and since then, I haven't lost a thing!!!! The human brain is quite a marvel!

Blogger lenmeister said ... (9:51 PM) :

What happened to your old gloves Sart? I remember you saying that you hope you gloves look like Mr Luciano Barbera's gloves in on of your pics of him? In any case you, Daffy's is always a good pic for some stylish, quality men accessories such as gloves. I'm not sure Barneys warehouse sale has any, was there and don't remember seeing any. Just sharing

Blogger Oksana said ... (10:19 PM) :

Wow, wow, wow. Such a stunning photograph in terms of both fashion and technique.

You know, you could buy hand-knit gloves on etsy. There are a lot of beautiful, well-made pieces to choose from : )

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:28 PM) :

Being in the fashion world this whole topic has come up several times in the office! It is all setup for back in the day when wealthy people took cruises to escape the cold they go buy cruise wear and spring wear but GOD those times are so OLD! Liz Claiborne has hired weather teams to determine when items should be out to sell but its going be a awhile till all catch on to something like this? It so needs to be brought up to the council of fashion God's or very higher ups of all?? Good-luck its shorts and tees time! Come to Florida were wearing it now!

Anonymous John Taylor said ... (10:31 PM) :

Absolutely love this photo! (and commiserate on the gloves)

Anonymous Kal said ... (10:34 PM) :

agreed! i live in MINNESOTA, lost my gloves, and can't find replacements for the life of me.

on a related note -- target has stopped selling sweatpants as well. since when are sweatpants seasonal??

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:39 PM) :

Great! I tried to buy gloves last week after work - thought it would be a quick task. I was just going for something cheap, just to get me home. I even tried CVS - nothing! I couldn't even find gardening gloves, believe me I tried.

Blogger Samantha said ... (10:47 PM) :

This. Is. Gorgeous.

I lived it up in the snow all day today (i'm only an hour from you!) but I bundled up in tights and a sweater... the red on my feet was only my hunters, no Louboutins.

Borrowed this for my blog because I love it so much. Great job, keep it up!

Anonymous Carol said ... (11:06 PM) :

Is it safe to wear stilettos in that weather?

And yes, what about when you want to travel overseas and the only shop you can buy a coat at is some mountain climbing shop because it's the middle of the Summer? That's the experience I've had here in Australia. I know, limited floor space, etc. just sayin'.

Blogger Natalie said ... (11:15 PM) :

Blogger andrea.at.the.blue.door said ... (11:19 PM) :

Yes, it's deeply unfair that losing a glove at this time of year means having one cold hand tucked into a pocket or under one's thigh while driving right until April. I've learned to keep a decent-looking pair of gloves in reserve every year.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:30 PM) :
