Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:02 AM) :

I'm cuban. I went to school with Aleida, Che Guevara's older daughter. This is not him. He was really tall. This guy looks like him. That's all.

Blogger misslikey said ... (8:04 AM) :

wow yes this is amazing

Blogger Mogens G. Andersen said ... (8:04 AM) :

I like this.

Blogger erinbrooks said ... (8:06 AM) :

I can't believe that THIS photo is the one without a back story. I am dying to know the context!!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:09 AM) :

This is the worst photo you've ever posted. why, on a blog about style, Would you post images of, and tacitly approve of, a murderous pig? You should have more respect for the victims of those monsters. Shame on you.

Blogger Elizabete said ... (8:09 AM) :

Lovely momeries!

Bisous.

Blogger Anita Puksic said ... (8:09 AM) :

I want to know the story too!

Peace and love!

Blogger Celia said ... (8:36 AM) :

Lol... funny photo!
This must be any carnival pic. They're not Fidel Castro or Che Guevara at all!
Che Guevara was a very big man and handsome, not as the one in the pic (my apollogies for that, lol...)
ANd also the two ladies don't look like cuban ladies, at least they were turists in Cuba, but in that case I don't think Castro and Guevara would even think about a pic with them... lol...
Well, it's a great funny photo as I said! lol

Blogger ieishah said ... (8:38 AM) :

Whoa. Your great grandma?? By far the most stylish thing you've ever posted. Thank you!

Che was a murderer and it's a real shame hollywood and the far left has idolized him as some sort of hero. Murderers are Murderers period.

Blogger Laguna Beach Fogey said ... (9:38 AM) :

Interesting photo. I have some photographs of my grandparents socialising with friendly Nazi officials (friends of the family), in early 1940s Germany. The Nazis were much more stylish than the Communists pigs, I can tell you.

Blogger Clayton said ... (9:49 AM) :

Could be wrong, but the pic appears to be posted with a bit of tongue-in-cheek, hence the "?" in the title. The facial expressions are great though, as I'm not sure any of them quite knows what to think about the others.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:53 AM) :

I really dont think that is Che. The height is wrong, the facial features totally off, the eyebrows...and the list continues. Just the uniform and the hat are similar.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:01 AM) :

He is not Che Guevara!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:10 AM) :

Funny pic but that is not the Che for sure!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:20 AM) :

Viva La Revolucion!!!!
She needs to wear something Khaki!!!!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:20 AM) :

which major politician is not a murderer?

Blogger Faux Naif said ... (11:26 AM) :

oh wow, this is fantastic. even if it isn't che, it's a damn good photo.

Anonymous Cubanita said ... (11:32 AM) :

That is definitely not Ernesto Guevara, but it is a funny photo nevertheless. Everyone's faces are so expressive-- you could write a short story just lookign at it. Also, the mural behind them with the live plant in front of it is AMAZING.

Blogger BelleBordel said ... (11:35 AM) :

1: Che Guevara was no murderer. Have you read his biography? Don't be ignorant and research before you make any comments.

2: This is NOT Che Guevara. I love your blog but please check your facts and photo.

3: Love your great grandma's style. Very beautiful.

Blogger Nat said ... (11:55 AM) :

That's not Che Guevera. He was joking. That's why he titled this post with a question mark. I think Scott is going to have to give an explanation in the next few posts. Anyway, Viva la Revolucion!

Blogger I could dress in black and read Camus said ... (11:55 AM) :

that is crazy amazing

Blogger Erika said ... (12:24 PM) :

I agree - not Che. Interesting photo. The ladies are well-dressed but not especially fashion-forward, so ?

Note: every radical revolutionary is a murderer. If Che hadn't been communist, he wouldn't be so vilified (or worshiped, for that matter.)

Anonymous Manu said ... (12:45 PM) :

Great picture! At first glance I thought the lady in the left looked like Queen Elizabeth II, hahaha, so bizarre! He's not Che, he wasn't a murderer, and a lot of people speak without knowing. Anyways, a nice pic.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:53 PM) :

The woman on the left appears to be wearing what we would call a "fiesta dress" heavily embellished with rick rack and trim, we don't see the bottom of the skirt where it would be the most decorated.

This type of outfit, when found as vintage, is very sought after. They used to be easy to find maybe 25 years ago, notsomuch any more.

Anonymous someone said ... (12:59 PM) :

wow. haha!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:44 PM) :

A very funny photo. This is definitely a joke. The two men are dressed like Fidel and Che, true HEROES for a big part of our world.

Blogger Unknown said ... (1:52 PM) :

Fidel and Che in the same room? Quick!! pass me my gun!!

Blogger Hal E. Liebling said ... (2:19 PM) :

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:39 PM) :

THIS IS NOT CHE!!
THIS IS SO GRINGO!! a little more history please!
VIVA EL CHE!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:42 PM) :

ese no es el che guevara....

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:17 PM) :

Not Che, move nothing to see here.

Blogger n p said ... (3:42 PM) :

Why should Scott feel ashamed of posting a third-party photo of a radical icon? Presenting a photograph of someone who may or may not be Che Guevera (hence the question mark in the title) does not necessarily reflect the photographer's, or the blogger's, own ideals. It seems that many commenters need a disclaimer before every photo, explaining that Scott does not necessarily condone the actions of anyone he has ever photographed, ever.

All debate aside, this is a wonderful and entertaining photo and captures the idea behind the vintage photo contest quite well. Why read into it any more than that?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:45 PM) :

why is it that you are against Che Guevara? This is a fashion blog and usually there are post of great brands that kill animals for furs and many of them are being accused for terrible workers conditions...

So please, be coherent for once and get some information about the corporations you vote for when you buy clothes.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:05 PM) :

That is not Guevara and he shouldn't be praised in any way or form.
His parents were ashamed of him and I as an argentinian, am ashamed of him.
Moving on.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:40 PM) :

Well, obviously the guy is not Che, but the lady on the right is a lot like Margaret Thatcher

Blogger FP said ... (6:02 PM) :

For those saying el Ché was "not a murderer, do your research" try telling that to all the families whose fathers were shot point blank against a wall, by Fidel and Ernesto because they wouldn't agree with their revolution... Think carefully before you post such ignorant facts, you are disrespecting the life and dignity of all Cubans...what a shame some people still think like this

Blogger archer said ... (6:33 PM) :

"read his biography to discover he's not a murderer" hahahaha that's hilarious!

Blogger Lee Oliveira said ... (7:00 PM) :

the mirror on the background!! WOW..
great pic! X www.leeoliveira.com

Blogger Simo said ... (7:48 PM) :

N'importe quoi!!!!!!!!!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:04 PM) :

That's not Che, but the woman on the right might well be Ethel Mertz!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:56 PM) :

wow, some of you people just....

first of all, that's NOT che. so you can stop berating scott about his "promoting and idealizing a murderous pig". that's why he put a question mark there.

secondly, the fact that so many of you don't even recognize that that's NOT him, shows you know little about che guevara other than the fact that he's a "big bad meanie."

thirdly, "murderers are murderers" apply equally to george washington, abraham lincohn and JFK. i guarantee you more people died under their policies than che's.

fourthly, this is a blog about style and these cats (whoever they are) have it. why politicize this and why hate on scott for posting it?

Anonymous Immigration Lawyers Melbourne said ... (11:27 PM) :

haha, look at that guy chewing a cigarette, so funny

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:34 PM) :

Those were the days, when you could hold a cigarette or light up a cigar on film without a debate ensuing. Well, not about smoking anyway.

Yo soy argentina, ese no es el Che !!!! por favor !!

Blogger Unknown said ... (2:17 AM) :

i chuckled at the title. was quite surprised at the comments posted...

Anonymous Tiberia said ... (2:28 AM) :

It's the Cheech and Chong version of Fidel and Che. Untwist all y'allz knickers already.

Blogger Anastasia said ... (4:18 AM) :

the thing that i first noticed is the wallpaper on the background wall..interesting.
id love to know whats going on - was this some sort of party/theatre show?

Blogger sandra fink said ... (4:49 AM) :

Nice pic. The guy is not the Che but he looks a bit like Cantinflas, the mexican comediant.

Blogger TheStreetFashion5xpro said ... (5:43 AM) :

incredible picture

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:53 AM) :

that definitely is NOT Che...

Blogger msduygu said ... (8:12 AM) :

To all of you who are quick to judge: apparently the question mark did not clue you in, but I'm pretty sure Scott is well aware that that is not Che. I'm starting to think that he was right when he said subtle humor does not seem to work online. Lighten up.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:55 AM) :

Sacrilegio! Ese no es el Che Guevara...nuestro querido comandante Che Guevara. Un saludo desde Argentina. Aguante el Che y la Revolución!

Blogger The Clever Pup said ... (11:06 AM) :

For heaven's sakes - Chill! This isn't Che. That's why Scott used the "?" in his title.

Anonymous Emily said ... (2:00 PM) :

Hahaha! Love this post and the fact that the anti-Che types are always slavering to get a dig in!

Anonymous Kevin said ... (2:10 PM) :

Che is appropriate on this blog because he is, whether you agree with his politics an icon, a popular icon and therefore he does figure into fashion.

On his politics, again, whether you agree with them or not, you should read up on the U.S. involvement with Cuba and Batista, Cuban history and the American Mafia before you throw "murderous pig" squarely and singly on Che.

Blogger Unknown said ... (2:48 PM) :

That's not Che the butcher. That's a wanna be midget.

Anonymous AnonymousJK said ... (3:22 PM) :

Where is the story for this photo? Surely one was submitted. This is not in my estimation Che, but what do I know? Either way, gr8 photo!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:28 PM) :

re Kahuna -haha... love it! the butcher!! To the idiot who said "Che was not a murderer" , you are such a complete idiot. Get you facts straight! Speak to Cubans who lived under the communist regime and get the facts! Not only was he a cowardly murderer , he was also a failed mercenary (angola) , bigot and a racist!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:40 PM) :

What's important about this photo is the sender's great grandmother and her style.

This image is special to whomever sent it in. It could be nice to have any discussion on politics offline and reserve this venue for sartorial commentary.

...at least out of respect for the families who send in photos of their loved ones.

Anonymous Ricardo said ... (7:04 PM) :

This guy is not the real Che Guevara.
And I don't get why you great-Grandmother would want to pose with an impersonator of a terrorist who killed innocent civilians. I am Argentine, like Che, and know the real story and to this day cannot understand the fascination of some people this murderer. First photo in your blog that I find in very poor taste.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:10 AM) :

Hey Ricardo, just because you're Argentine doesn't mean you know the "truth" about Che. I'm Canadian, that doesn't mean I know everything there is to know about Wayne Gretzy and Pierre Trudeau. Your opinion is your opinion; it is not a fact. Furthermore, if you know this is not Che, then how is this photo "in poor taste?" Scott can't even post photos of people who LOOK LIKE someone you don't approve of?? That's censorship to the extreme.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:09 AM) :

this is definitely not che guevara ... the ladies are wonderful

Blogger Heather Feemster said ... (12:35 PM) :

Wow, it's unbelievable folks don't understand that of course it's not Che hence the "Che" but a fun look back at how this culture styled themselves in general at this time!!! Very Che esq. and regardless of his politics his look has been very influential in fashion like it or not. To all you out there that don't get it relax a bit and see this photo for what it is, history, culture, style......

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:02 PM) :

Apparently no one on this blog has walked in Time Square and taken a picture with a fake (fill in the blank: Elvis, Marilyn Monroe, Nixon, etc.) Or been to an amusement park and taken a “vintage” picture.

This is clearly a novelty picture. One would hope that the readers of such an interesting and global blog as Scott’s would see this picture through a broader, more-enlightened world context.

As a novelty, this picture is about the LADIES.

While the real leaders/villians/terroists/freedom fighters in our history are serious and have real gifts and real flaws, these "actors" are just decoration in the picture.

The fake Fidel & Che could be Mussolini & Hitler, or Chairman Mao & Pol Pott, Napoleon, Lenin, or even a fake Osama bin Laden as a backdrop. This picture is nothing more than a silly, light-hearted look back at the style of the time.

Get a life.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:21 PM) :

blah blah blah, wow. "I get so touchy with "non-fashion" posts, who cares really?"

Anonymous Agustina said ... (9:17 PM) :

Like many have already said, this man is not the real Che. Anyway, we don't have to forget the meaning of this blog and understand that the point of the photo was the woman and sharing it with us, either if it was the real Che or not and the political meaning that this person represents. Like Ricardo i am too from Argentina, i've read a lot too and don't think like him, anyway here is not the place to discuss politicals opinions if you want to talk seriously. Never forget the respect, the tolerance and if you are so against the violence first transmit it to your writting.

Blogger vino415 said ... (5:00 AM) :

Actually Che has a higher exterior nose line, this is an actor or a stager (which is a reference to a political impersonater then), but awesome either way - this is my first post. I have been following this posting for months and think that it has changed my fashion life since then! I used to dress well and living in SF and a business owner, here its so casual I forgot what its like to dress up. Thank you Satorialist for bringing me back to style.

Anonymous Rams said ... (6:28 AM) :

I love the photo! They really look like young Castro and Che. Would have fooled me.. And the wibe with the two American looking old ladies is just perfect..

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:14 PM) :

Saw this post a while back, just got a chance to read the comments.

WOW... re: 'murderous pig'....Its simply amazing that after all these years, the average age of a person who could read this blog could still have such a fierce reaction to the mention of Ernesto Guevara.

And yeah I am a history buff...I doubt this was him...he was indeed known for his height and 'presence' ...not just a cigar, or Fidel-like beard.

To summarize I think this photo is great....albeit mislabeled.

Anonymous Doncella said ... (9:12 PM) :

what a bizarre/historic/intriguing story behind this photo, do tell !

Blogger Unknown said ... (9:39 AM) :

jajaja ...I think he looks more like Mariano Moreno "Cantinflas" impersonating Che... incredible look he's throwing to the lady on the right! NICE PIC!!!

Anonymous Kit said ... (1:16 AM) :

Che and Fidel?
Cheech and Chong.

Blogger Carlijn said ... (4:31 AM) :

I really like this picture! I like the wallpaper. I am wondering where it is taken? Is it in a restaurant or cafe? I can't tell by the view through the open door behind them.

However, I love the way the lady on the right is dressed. The black dress (I suppose), the hair is done beautiful and I love the earrings!! The facial expression from the lady on the left is great. Love her smile in combination with the sunglasses.
And then the look that man is trowing on the woman on the right.. Stunning picture!

Blogger Unknown said ... (9:46 AM) :

Conrado, I saw your comment and sincerely I thinked the same Cantifla and Tintán artors too!But someone in this blog understood wrong.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:38 PM) :

it's obviously a joke!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:31 AM) :

Easily not Ché -- otherwise the two ladies flanking him would be dead.

Blogger bien venido a mi sitio web said ... (7:23 PM) :

very amazing. Is it true Che was taller than this? Also, how amazing that the guys are both smoking 'havanas'

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:06 PM) :

Obviously, this picture is a joke. Two tourists taking a picture with two impersonators. (Both Castro and Guevara were taller and much more attractive)

Cuban exiles are extremely annoying when they start screaming their politics. Stop assuming you're "enlightening" those of us who admire Che, or "teaching us" about anything.

Did Castro and Guevara kill people? --Uh, ya. They were revolutionaries. That's what happens in wars. It's natural for one to be sad/angry if one has lost a family member in a conflict. We understand you.

However, that's the nature of conflict. People who like Che generally like his ideals and dislike the government(s) he fought against. In the American Civil War, Abe Lincoln's army killed a whole bunch of Confederate soldiers. A lot of Southerners are still mad and call it the "War of Northern Agression", but a lot of us don't worry about it, since we think the North and Abe Lincoln were right.

Blogger Zbarsky said ... (5:10 AM) :

this. is. beauty in a photo.

Anonymous maffie said ... (12:04 AM) :

maybe they are funny people whom you pay for a tourist funny photo
