The Mystery of the V-Neck Tee, Milano

Why is it that some guys look so cool in a V-neck tee, such as Milan V. in this photo, and some guys look like total sleazeballs?

Usually a good chest helps to fill out a tee, but with a V-neck I think a well defined collarbone is a huge help. This is similar to the idea of never wearing a tank-top unless you have well defined shoulders.

I think that it's nice only when the V neck is not too low - that's when men look like sleazeballs.

Blogger Tommy V. said ... (10:00 AM) :

I think a bigger upper body definitely helps. Skinny dudes look too much like AA models.

Anonymous Joseh said ... (10:00 AM) :

as you siad.. it is depend of what kind of body you have.....also not so much cheest hair helps to look good in a V - neck T

Anonymous Lee Oliveira said ... (10:01 AM) :

I love a plain white v neck t,
it complement the entire outfit..
im kinda of obsessed with his aviator's
mm.. i know what to buy tomorrow..

Blogger Beverly. said ... (10:01 AM) :

This guy has the attitude that will rock anything he wears.

Blogger The Baker said ... (10:02 AM) :

I think a tan usually helps, and the less chest hair the better as far as the sleaze thing goes. It's a fine line to walk but this guy does it great.

Blogger TheStreetFashion5xpro said ... (10:12 AM) :

you're right scott...great shot as usual

Anonymous j said ... (10:14 AM) :

i think amount of chest hair and sleeze relationship is directly related.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:16 AM) :

Too many men wear tank tops that shouldn't.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:21 AM) :

To me it's all about what's being worn with the v-neck. Any man-jewelry, and it's automatic sleaze. Ditto for abundant chest hair, as well as any "fancy" accessories that might make him look like he's trying too hard.
Kind of like a girl in a hot dress wearing too much makeup and heels. Kills the sexiness by trying too hard.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:21 AM) :

V-neck is something very in in Bangkok right now. I think it's not about the though upper body (since Thai guys are generally skinny) but I agree that the collar bones do help.

Blogger Maya said ... (10:23 AM) :

Totally cool -my husb wears V's as sleepwear!!

Blogger Jo said ... (10:27 AM) :

This guy pulls this off perfectly. As a matter of fact, the whole look is quite sexy. I love the jacket. The aviators don't hurt the look, either.
I think that jewelry with a v-neck on a guy contributes to sleaziness.

Blogger E said ... (10:33 AM) :

This man certainly has the right aura about him to pull off the outfit- effortless cool.

And chest hair in this situation would defiantly make the wearer a bit. . . Boorish?

I only have one complaint- is that jacket camo?

Blogger Michael Kiser said ... (10:33 AM) :

It requires some or all of the following:

- defined jawline
- facial hair / stubble
- a general ruddiness of the skin
- visible collar bone
- wide shoulders

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:34 AM) :

I think his poise and the fact that he's very handsome helps. ; )

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:36 AM) :

It's all about his attitude. He looks great, and not what I'd normally expect of an Italian man.

Blogger davidikus said ... (10:40 AM) :

You are making very good remarks and I thin the size of the neck plays a part. If your neck is very long, the v will extend it too much (the opposite of using polo necks, if that makes sense). It depends on the effect that you are after, though!

Blogger Red Closet diary said ... (10:40 AM) :

I Agree to Beverly Bohan...
This man got a bit of attitude ( kinda "Sexy & Rebel" xoxo)..

Blogger Gerontius said ... (10:53 AM) :

You asked: Why is it that some guys look so cool in a V-neck tee, such as Milan B. in this photo, and some guys look like total sleazeballs?

Two words: chest hair.

Blogger Alice Olive said ... (10:57 AM) :

Because some people can carry off a paper bag. The person who catches our collective 'sartorial eye' has a confidence, an elegance and an attitude. You can't buy that. (Although good deportment is something which can be learned!)

Also no metal-based neck jewelry and no bath mat-o-chest hair. Take the gentleman in your picture and imagine those two additionals? Insta-sleaze!

Anonymous Mute said ... (11:18 AM) :

Oh guys with great collarbones would look really nice in a v-neck tee!

Blogger Unknown said ... (11:22 AM) :

Am I the only one hunting the internet for that wind breaker! It's a must in Miami this time of year (hurricane season). Awesome photo!

Anonymous laurent said ... (11:27 AM) :

Alone its an undershirt. One must be thin or well-built to wear it. But it remains an undershirt. Tank tops are for sports, Certainly not indoors, especially when eating. Grow up.

Blogger Julia, the Thanksgiving Girl said ... (11:29 AM) :

It's all about the chest, in my opinion! Probably because in this case the V shape helps accentuate a man's body shape which is, well, a V shape in a way ;)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:31 AM) :

Well, he does look a little sleazy... But I'd say the hood on the jacket is making this look - it creates a nice collar/shawl around what might otherwise be too much naked neck. That and the good sense not to wear any neck jewelry.

Blogger The Original Swedish Blonde! said ... (11:38 AM) :

I have a hard time taking my eyes off of him. He's hot! :)
Vs yes....tanks no thanks! "lol"

I will cherish this picture..."lol" Thank you!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:40 AM) :

Yes! Who is this dude? One of my favourite people featured on here. Love his well cut clothes and close cropped hair. Would love to steel his wardrobe :-)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:07 PM) :

Women have the same issue - I look good in crew, boat and scoop neck t's but never in a v-neck. For me I think it's body type + hair + face shape. I'm round and feminine and the angularity of the v-neck just doesn't work well with that. This dude's very angular, which is probably why it does work.

Blogger Unknown said ... (12:07 PM) :

His name is Milan Vukmirovic
not Milan B...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:11 PM) :

He's got great style - love the belt and the attitude. Very sexy - wonder who he's talkin' to??

Anonymous Patricia said ... (12:15 PM) :

You're right, you either have it or you don't!

I love the laid back look of it but it also is very sensually inviting if the chest baring it is not a bad sight either! Then there are some people miss the mark!

http://www.pinkpeonieswithlove.blogspot.com/

Anonymous The Photodiarist said ... (12:15 PM) :

Oh my hotness . . . I mean goodness. No, I mean hotness.

Well, it's about the chest and one that isn't teeming with overgrown chest hair. It's a bit gross when the chest hair puffs up and around the opening of the t-shirt - like a wild English garden.

Blogger Marie said ... (12:24 PM) :

But was he wearing socks?

Blogger Stephen said ... (12:34 PM) :

As with square glasses, angles help to balance a rounder face. I have a round face and I think that a v neck is a good thing for that compared to a round collar. Of course if you have a chiseled mug then probably any shirt looks good.

Anonymous Heather said ... (12:42 PM) :

It is all in the body type. Certain looks flatter different shapes and sizes.

Blogger Holly said ... (12:44 PM) :

also the V has to be the right size: not too deep, and just about the length to the chest.
i saw some guys wearing AA tee which has really deep V, it's too show-off and very much scary to me...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:51 PM) :

He looks like he should be on some kind of army mission in the jungle... Maybe it's just the camouflage jacket, shades, and the blurred foliage in the background influencing me on this one. Regardless, he's gorgeous!

Blogger Unknown said ... (12:52 PM) :

Forget v-necks. Crew-necks look better. Think Brando in Streetcar.

Blogger Juan Manuel Trejo Sánchez said ... (12:52 PM) :

It's the dude enhanced!

Anonymous FabVH said ... (12:55 PM) :

Too much "gay porn actor with waxed chest".
I like the belt.

Blogger Simone said ... (12:58 PM) :

I think most man look hot with a v-neck. I really like this man's combination!

Blogger Mai said ... (1:01 PM) :

I like v-necks on guys with broad shoulders and a defined collar bone. Something about how the v hangs there and frames the chest. I disagree with an earlier comment about not having a v-neck be too low, I like low v-necks on men. This guy is particularly stellar.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:08 PM) :

I think a v-neck is like any other skin-baring style: if you have something to look at there, be it collarbones, a nice tan or beautiful skin, a nice chest, it doesn't hurt to show it off a little. If you don't have anything to look at, a crew neck is just fine.

If you show it off too much you veer into sleaze. The conventions of masculinity forbid too much of a display no matter what you've got, hence the sleaze factor.

Chest hair is another matter where balance is appropriate. Older men with obviously waxed chests are too precious, as are obvious trim jobs, but too much hair is also offensive. Again, the conventions of masculinity require that you look neither overgroomed nor like something prehistoric. We've all seen examples of what not to look like, so go out there and try to look natural.

Blogger Mxolisi Ngonelo said ... (1:13 PM) :

No doubt you have to be in shape. Winter in SA, time to hit the weights for the summer.

Blogger Kraftina said ... (1:17 PM) :

jejeje... this boy remind me of Sylvester Stallone... but few years ago!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:19 PM) :

Hey, just a second. Isn't this the same guy you photographed in Paris last year in a low v-neck sweater (navy, I think)? It's his signature. :)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:25 PM) :

I agree with some of the comments above and with Scott's comments.

My opinion is that you have to mix it with quality items - like this fellow did - his jacket, belt, pants, sunglasses - all nice. The tee shirt is so "throw away" that as long as it's PRISTINE, it's the perfect summer shirt.

It also doesn't hurt to have a nice bod and not be too hairy.

And it CANNOT be "tight" (as in Simon Cowell, nipple exposing, tight)

Yer Pal!

I'm with the rest who have suggested a lack of or at least minor amount of chest hair is essential for this look.

Anonymous Down Comforter said ... (2:49 PM) :

It's like when you give the right guy a t-shirt from Wal-mart, it would look sexy on him, but if it's the wrong person, even you give him a totally hot designer's t-shirt, it wont look good.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:43 PM) :

if the tee is casual and effortless, then it looks like it's done correctly. when it appears to be worn to show off, then it looks cheesy. Here in Miami so much cheesy... this gentleman has an elegant style.

Tips to pulling off the v-neck:

1) Not too low (you're not J Lo)

2) Not too tight (If I can see your nipples, it's too tight)

3) No lame accessories (no gold chain unless you're in the mafia)

4) Profit

Anonymous Christa said ... (12:37 AM) :

Not wearing man jewelry with a deep V is also a huge help.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:40 AM) :

OH MY GOD. you have just revealed to me why tank-tops look so awful on me! and now that i know the reason, i will never attempt to wear them again. thank you for making my life that much less ugly.

Anonymous miko said ... (3:08 AM) :

I think that the collar bone and chest hair do play a part. And agree that how low the v goes affects the whole look too. Too low, and it looks sleazy. The fit of the shirt is also kinda important like the v, if it is too tight, it's a bit much. A nice body skimming relxed fit is so much sexier.

Blogger Headhuntress said ... (4:14 AM) :

I was never a fan of men in v necks, till I met my husband, who suites them to a Tee!

It definitely requires collar bones, darker skin colour, not too much hair and good shoulders. Although I saw a rather slim pale chap wearing a very low v-neck the other day that near enough went down to his waist and he carried it off with such aplomb, that I actually caught myself staring.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:18 AM) :

I think it's all about the rest of the look wether you can pull off a V-neck or not. Deep V-necks on men are kind of feminine to me, so they need 'rough' partners like that windbreaker and they should have basic colors. The haircut is very important as well. I hate all those teenage boys with too much gel in their hair, jewelry all over and then a V-neck tee in some feminine color like lavender because they think that's what they need to look 'smooth'. When in fact they look like idiots.

Blogger m said ... (5:31 AM) :

Hmm I wear v-necks all the time, and always have (as far as I remember)... main reason though is since I have a bigger rounder head, and a v-neck balances it out more than a crew neck (which just emphasizes its roundness)

Blogger Talei said ... (6:15 AM) :

I LOVE the V-neck! Love, love, love them. Some guys just look hot in everything.

Blogger thwany said ... (6:41 AM) :

Anonymous Mark R said ... (6:44 AM) :

I HAVE to get that jacket!! Where is it from please??

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:50 AM) :

This is so right, also, if you have a muscular "A line" shoulder bone like Chad White, it won't fitted with a huge collar neck lose tee, it better suit a "T line" shoulder bone with a more skinny and pale type like Cole Mohr. It is quite interesting to investigate what type of tee neck suit what type of body structure.

What is it about men in aviators? They can't all pull it off, but when they do.... so sexy!

Anonymous Leendert de Rijke said ... (2:26 PM) :

Not only a well defined collarbone is a huge help to make guys look cool in a V-neck. It also depends on the shape of the head/face - in particular the chin, lips and nose.
A V-neck looks cool on guys with a obvious sharp shaped head/face because the sharp shaped V-neck is harmonious with the sharp shaped head/face.
Any guy with a head/face with a manifest round shape should never wear a V-neck because the sharp V-neck is in contrast with the round characteristics of his head/face.
This 'theory' is proved by this photo. This guy looks cool in a V-neck because he has a very sharp shaped nose, his upper lip is straight-lined and also his chin is a little bit sharp-lined. And also because his collarbone is well defined.

Greetz from the Netherlands,

Leendert

I totally agree with guillermo, who wrote "Forget v-necks. Crew-necks look better. Think Brando in Streetcar."

Crew-necks are much cooler, much more masculine. A V-neck might occasionally work, but only if it's a high V. Low Vs look ridiculously femme.

Imagine Brando in Streetcar. Imagine James Dean in his trademark white crew-neck. Imagine in your mind's eye this guy in a crew-neck instead.

Much better!

Blogger 82Brute said ... (4:16 PM) :

Someone needs to tell SImon Cowell to read this blog. He's one of those guys who lives in v-necks and probably shouldn't.

Anonymous Bronze said ... (4:33 PM) :

He has to have some element of rugged masculinity to effectively pull off the v-neck. On the right guy it's a turn on.

Blogger Coni Masciave said ... (4:52 PM) :

I think the camo jacket works, strangely. It's the fabric combined with the cut of the trouser and the shirt that keeps it from being sloppy and makes it sexy.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:54 PM) :

well I don't like this look on him at aall - probably because he thinks he looks good in it - when in actual fact it doesn't suit him at all

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:12 PM) :

He looks like he's talking with Headquarters, getting the specs for his next secret mission... very nice! :)

I think his belt is actually the best part (or at least the crucial piece) of the ensemble--the long end adds the perfect touch of sophisticated raffishness.

The only thing that would improve this look would be a smidge of trimmed chest hair at the base of the V. There is a middle ground between looking like a plush toy and looking creepily pre-pubescent, and I wish more men occupied it.

Anonymous Alexia Von Appen said ... (6:49 PM) :

I actually don't agree with leendert, i think a v neck helps to sharpen rounder faces, the same way that it complements sharper features, the thing here is as always if you have the body to carry it off. Its not pretty to watch some chunky man in a v neck showing off some man-decolletage, in those cases it helps to do maybe a round neck T with a v neck sweater, but if you have a nice defined collar bone even if your pecs aren't quite like hunky here you shouldn't shy away from wearing one proudly, attitude makes a huge difference

Anonymous Ari Stuart said ... (6:55 PM) :

Milan V. was a former model, no? That means his body makes clothes look good.

He's always sexy and masculine, even in pink cashmere. And he has the money to tailor everything to suit his body.

What I want to know is how he keeps his sleeves rolled up all the time -- nylon jacket as here, sport jacket, suit jacket, ... I'd be pushing my sleeves up all the time and that gets tiresome.

Anonymous Bec215 said ... (12:23 AM) :

The V-neck tee for men is like a jumpsuit or a 'onesie' for women... there is absolutely no 'gray area' - it either works for you or it doesn't, and there are very few for whom it works. This guy owns his look... though agree, wish the jacket weren't camo. The camo with the aviators together are a little macho for my taste.

Blogger Unknown said ... (4:37 AM) :

I feel like any or all of the following help the case of a man in a V neck:
1) sunglasses
2) male model stubble
3) posture
4) a little bit of chest hair
5) rolled up sleeves.

Anonymous Purses Pastries Etc... said ... (6:29 AM) :

Totally depends on body type! Personally, I don't think it goes on men with abnormaly huge, bulging muscles -- and they're the ones who I usually see wearing v-neck t's. This guy looks great though -- thumbs up!

Anonymous Arash Mazinani said ... (7:07 AM) :

I wear v necks all the time, I used to wear round necks but just feel v necks are more flattering on a slimmer body.

I like the outfit in the photo. It's curious how a basic tee can make different effects depending on its shape and the body it covers.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:09 PM) :

It's the collar bones and the fact he has a slight six o'clock shadow on his face. I rather like the bare chest in this photo. Does he wax? The whole look is hot.

Blogger bubblistyle said ... (1:43 PM) :

This v neck looks good on Milan! while when other people wear it, it just looks plain weird. so i do agree with your point.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:14 PM) :

does someone know where to buy this jacket?

Blogger Alexander D. Chan said ... (2:58 PM) :

that's why even though I like v-necks, I don't wear them all the time...

it's very sad that i am designed to be a clothes-hanger.

Blogger TaylorASHLEY said ... (3:34 PM) :

I think its how you wear it but most defiantly body type. If you're pretty well built than you mostly can get away with it.

Blogger Unknown said ... (5:45 PM) :

For a V-Tee you have to have a good chest! But though i love V-neck tee's.

Anonymous Bob Mack said ... (6:47 PM) :

a good chest is important, but the fit is important as well, some muscular guys make the mistake of buying V necks that are too tight or have too deep a V, and they end up looking like Hooters employees.

Blogger My So Called Life said ... (7:04 PM) :

V-necks are classic, but it usally depends on the v-neck not the person. I actually love v-necks because you can add them to anything, but for men v-necks just need to be the right height, and not to low, and the same thing goes for women too.

I truly admire all your photos and style tips but this has to be a slip in judgment. Half of all gay people in Europe look like this when they go on holiday!

Blogger stainlesskiss said ... (10:11 PM) :

already been mentioned before, but its true - usually the lower the V the sleeezy-er the man!

Apart from a good chest, a hairless chest helps a lot :)

Blogger Siblings said ... (12:30 AM) :

yes, now that you mention it, vee necks looks heaps better on some, better then others.

Anonymous Blaise said ... (1:25 AM) :

Guys like Vin Diesel would look good in a V neck shirt. Much like this dude.

Blogger Unknown said ... (2:14 AM) :

I really want that jacket now :S I know its been asked, but anyone have any ideas?

Anonymous Smilla said ... (2:24 AM) :

Good question. I've noticed the sleaze factor with V necks on guys at the gym. Eeeuuuwww. Not a good look at all but this guy is definitely an exception. Maybe it's a European thing....

Blogger AlexandraPearl said ... (5:29 AM) :

I prefer men with chest hair myself.

Anonymous proletarian Great Gatsby said ... (6:07 AM) :

I prefer a more closed neckline, perhaps less classic(see"Trainspotting",1996,Dir. Danny Boyle).

Anonymous Grishma said ... (6:56 AM) :

He seems to be channeling a strong military look, with the aviators, jacket and cargos. So the V neck doesn't do much damage. Also the white is set off very nicely against his tan! www.mumbaiishtyle.com

Blogger Álvaro said ... (8:26 AM) :

i think that the v-neck is good when it doesn´t look like a cleavage of a gown

Sexy man, I wonder why he can be so sexy, hot without an effort!

Anonymous Rhi said ... (11:41 AM) :

I think part of it may be the chest hair. If they've got too much it just looks wrong with white. Black could work with chest hair though...

Anonymous Megan said ... (3:01 PM) :

I think that only guys that have a defined chest can pull it off. If they don't not only do they look like sleazeballs they look like wimpy sleazeballs. The defined collarbone definitely helps to make the V-neck look so sauve on him.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:15 PM) :

Hot, HOT, H-O-T...Sexy & definitely DEE-LI-CIOUS! Everything works beautifully because even with the light-wieght wind breaker hoodie in camoflouge pattern (that is slightly muted and worn) it's still considered neutral. The pants are neutral; the white v-neck is neutral. The brown belt in neutral. One would think that all neutral might be boring, but it's not because khakis, white shirt, & a brown belt make a classic color combination. However, this gentleman's take on the classic transcends that collegiate look. His tan is fantastic. And his aviator sun-glasses "sex'ed" up his whole look and demeanor. Oh...and those luscious lips framed by the day's growth of stubbles...Nuff said!

Blogger Lin said ... (2:37 AM) :

V-necks are everywhere aren't they? I am funny in that I don't care for v-neck tees on men (not even this fine man), however I LOVE a nice classic v-neck sweater on a man. Go figure! I think the difference is the plunge-itude of the neckline. In this photo for instance, it is too plunging for me! Sometimes v-necks looks like they've been pulled or stretched, which I don't like. But a nice v-neck sweater is a cleaner line. :-)

Anonymous palzileri said ... (5:14 AM) :

Not really a fan of the shirt. But I like the jacket.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:04 PM) :

defined collarbone- right on! that's what it's all about. it gives almost a femininity to the v neck wearer and allows him to remain un-sleazy in my mind!

i've read a book that say's if your neck is the same or similar width to your head, wear a v neck tee. But if your head is bigger then your neck width, wear a crew tee's.

I have an oblong face shape and my neck & face width is similar & v neck tees look great on me. Crew tees long like shit on me.

Hope this helps

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:08 AM) :
