On the Street...Matt, Atlanta
Garance and I LOVED Atlanta and Savannah. We will be going back again very soon, hopefully before the end of this year. The people were so cool and so chic. This first trip was like a recon to get prepared for our return. Also, thanks to everyone that attended my exhibit opening, that was fun.
I really loved the Sid Mashburn shop (Matt works there). They offer a great edit of fashion and style items for gentleman. I will have to go back to do a more in-depth report on the shop but if you are in the area I recommend checking it out.
At this very moment I'm in Milan (where I do most of my shopping) but I keep thinking about a great "special edition" Barbour coat that I saw in Atlanta, My world is turning upside- down!

Call me crazy but I actually like this look sans the socks. He pulls it off well. I saw the same look on Kanye a few weeks ago and wasn't to hyped about it. He makes this look effortless though. Love the hand in the pocket too

As a born an raised Southerner, I think you have really captured the "classic" modern Southern style with this picture. Though there are many more styles to love down here, and while this one isn't my own, this style is the epitome of the well dressed "good ol' boy" from down South. From the bushy haircut, blue striped shirt, red tie, golden belt buckle, and no socks, this is the classic look, though exceptionally tailored. I respectfully disagree with the poster above who said that no socks is posturing. Down South it's oppressively hot this time of year, and it's extremely common to go without socks in nice shoes. Glad y'all liked it down here, hope y'all come back down and stay a while.

The suit is nice, the shoes are nice, but with the crop and no socks they look a little clownish. Unless his last name ends in a vowel he could stand to dial it down a notch.
the length of the pants actually kills it for me... i dunno sometimes i like this look but on this great suit it just makes it look like the pants dont fit right.

My best friend keeps insisting that he would look better with black shoes and belt because he's wearing blue pants. I would like some opinion on this. Obviously, not being a guy, I don't know much about the belt-shoe color coordination, but I think the gentleman here looks so much nicer with those brown shoes than he would in black ones. This guy is better dressed than 99.8% of the population. More flair. Better fit. The lot. But more than anything, look at his body language. He could give a a **** what I or anybody else could possibly say or think about him. Hand in pocket and drink in hand, Sunny Southern afternoon. Who could rain on his parade? This man is his own. Atlanta cool and chic??? That indeed turns MY associations of the city upside down. I wonder if you saw more of the romanticized South, rather than the real Atlanta. Savannah embodies that romanticism however, true. Makes me glad to think though that, at least clothes wise, Atlanta may be more than just air-conditioned isolationism.

I love everyone's comments regarding their disdain for the "played out" no socks thing. For everyone's information: this look has been something of a standard in the South for decades and has little to do with any current prevailing trend. Say what you wish about the length of his pants, but the whole business of wearing shoes without socks is sort of a classic Southern thing, and will not disappear any time in the near future.

Great photo Scott, as always Matt looks totally smooth. He and all the guys at Sids have inspired me with my own wardrobe. And over the past year and they've opened my eyes to a bigger picture of fashion and its individual interpretation. Sid and his team capture the meaning of true southern hospitality and make you feel welcome from the minute you step into they're store.
I miss Atlanta, I used to live there as a kid... I love his look, so sleek and yet there's somthing really nerdy going on there. Or nerdy might not be the right word... I dunno, whimsical? Anyway, the shoes are really the cherry on top!

i was raised in atlanta but have been living in italy longer now. it has always had and under the radar stylish side, but i agree on my more recent visits something big seems to have changed. as a whole it's so much more interesting and buzzing. a funny mix of old and new. great to see your pics depicting the same sense.

I went to SCAD for college, in Savannah! It's absolutely lovely, very picturesque and charming! My favorite thing is the clash between the SCAD kids' and the Savannians' style.

i'm so glad you enjoyed your stay! like many others, i was going to recommend athens to you, but i decided not to because your schedule seemed a bit tight. if you come back to georgia, though, hit it up! it's my favorite town for people-watching.
Also, enough already with the complaint of "no socks look" with dress shoes. I ALWAYS wear Shoe Liner socks from Johnston and Murphy or the No Show Loafer Liner Sock from Gold Toe. Feet stay fresh, shoes NEVER smell. The breeze is great on the ankles. You haters should try it. Liberating really.

Beatles style was the first thing that came to me--but not quite so naive--makes it look great.
Of course Atlanta is fabulous! On your next visit, check out Virginia Highlands if you haven't already. Cobble-stoned streets and little chic shops...
Also...Charleston, SC is a must-see. So if you like Savannah, you will love Charleston.
Also...if you need your real Italian espresso fix. Hit up Cafe Intermezzo in Atlanta. I just moved here from France and its the only suitable cafe in that huge city.
Though its nestled in a little luxury shopping center off and not on a cobble-stoned street, it is adorable. I think it offers about 100 different types of tea and coffee.
But again, the coffee is legit.

I'm becoming increasingly fascinated with the idea of double monk strap shoes lately. On this fellow though, I find they jump out a bit too much: the large shoe size combined with skinny high-water trousers results in a silhouette less harmonious than it could be. If he were to keep the trousers as they are, penny loafers (perhaps in a burgundy shade) might be better (untraditional, but so is no socks).
As always though, attitude makes or breaks an outfit. The rest of the ensemble is spot-on, and his nonchalant demeanour carries it through, even with the loud shoes.

OK, this is just perfect. Is his tie on backwards? Because I love that. Also the peeking watch with the wristband that mirrors his belt = amazing. I'm still not in agreement with the sockless look, think he could have looked better with black socks to hide the tiny flash of skin below his trousers, but everything else is just great. His expression and posture especially.

i have been following your blog since a mention of it was in a magazine a couple of years ago and have been totally hooked ever since, it must be a very inspiring job. please keep up the good work.
To echo a few comments above, guys wearing shoes without socks is common in the south (even in the mountains of WNC). This may be a wider new trend these days, but it is nothing new to us.
This is a great look. The shoes with no socks is not a fashion fad here in the south. It was a common look back in the 80's among my Florida and Georgia college friends. No socks with loafers or deck shoes in summer is a common look here in Atlanta.
