a very tasteful way to show off some skin, just my opinion. even if she's dressed in black she still stands out. i love the effects of the birds flying on the background too. very dramatic.

Love the shoes and the backdrop( though i don't fancy standing amongst birds in flight)..but her cocked eyebrow makes it a little less candid.. a bit staged..lovely overall though xx meenal

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:28 AM) :

The first thing I thought when I saw this picture is that I normally wouldn't love the shoes, but her skirt length and the thickness of her legs make it all work. This I thought, before seeing the previous post and ensuing dialogue.

I really appreciate your work, every pictures transcribes or build an emotion...

So, thank you, really !

Hey Scott,
This comment relates to your earlier photos! and just as much to this one!
I've been reading/salivating over your blog for yonks. I'm healthy and I love my body (most days), I'm about a 12 (australian sizes...) so i'd say i've got curves everywhere...! The biggest thing I get out of your blog is inspiration. I don't look at size, I've learnt not too (my body is my own and nobody elses is the same... you can't copy the shape of an arse as a fashion statement!) , what I love most is that I can get inspiration from anyone, in whatever form it comes and then use that inspiration to celebrate my unique shape and expression!
The biggest thing that happens when one talks about womens bodies (and one of the most dissapointing, for me) is that we (EVERYONE) seems to think that pointing out differences inherantly also implies what the 'norm' looks like.
We are all different from each other, normal is a myth that haunts everyone and taunts them if ever they are brave enough to love and accept their own skin.
Fashion is about style and attitude, you can find that in the most unexpected places and on the most unassuming bodies.
I loved those photos, and you are right about her legs and those shoes, they balance BEAUTIFULLY... Balance is a massive part of the reason why I look incredible in thick heavy cowboy boots (they make my hips sway and balance my thighs!) and someone like Garance (she posted about this!) doesn't feel like they would work!
There is no safe way to write or think about womens bodies, there is no modern jargon that will keep you out of trouble. Every word carries many unique connotations for each of us, and in the end, perhaps if you can see the positive way in which terms like 'curvy' and 'sturdy' can be used then perhaps you are better off! Negative connotations will only narrow our ability to describe diversity and to openly and objectively love and learn from each others style!

I really don't like either of these pictures with the clunky shoes. I don't think the proportions work at all. Either of those shoes would have been better with a flared or boot cut pant or maxi skirt than a miniskirt or skinny jeans. I'm also a "curvy" girl and wearing a big shoe just calls to attention your thighs in a not flattering way. I don't mind a platform, but it should have been an open toe wedge and that bare leg would have looked less like a brick attached to her foot.

Dear Scott,
I see what you mean calling them curvy. I saw the pictures from yesterday and was anxiously awaiting today's post.
I agree with one comment made earlier I come to this brogue to get inspired and these two pictures have defenatly inspired me.
These are tall, curvy, beautiful women who seem very comfortable with their shape. You see I believe that a picture is suposed to capture something, a moment in a person's life, something about a person that sometimes is not clear for all to see.
It's true that we can not presume to know much about a person just from looking at a picture, but I believe that this is what makes your pictures so beautiful and inspiring. You manage to capture something about the people that you photograph that is rare and unique.
Keep up the good work.

This is a great photo, and so were the ones from yesterday. My problem is that you found the need to say anything about their size at all. You say you want to talk about the issue, but we don't seem to talk about the typically very thin women you post as an "issue." These women are different sizes. They still look amazing. What is the issue here?

I totally agree with you, eyah1117.

It is so great that you post some photos of different body shapes, as it sometimes is difficult for the more "curvy" girls (as myself) to find flattering clothes and styles for a more curvy body. The two photos was a great inspiration of how to dress!

Love your photos!

Blogger mikal said ... (11:42 AM) :

Let the haters hate. Your blog is terrific. Call the women what you want: curvy, normal, anorexic, transparent, sexy, etc., but people need to realize that anyone can be fashionable and that everyone has some sense of style.

Blogger InStudio Blog said ... (12:06 PM) :

This photo "had me" until I saw the shoes. Just not diggin'em.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:11 PM) :

As someone "blessed" with a pear shaped body, I had written off chunky shoes, skinny jeans and in general, anything that clings to the legs...but these pictures are really making me re-think those principles. I don't know though, I am also short, and it would seem that long legs would need to be part of the equation for all the shapes to work together. Still tinkering... And for that, I thank you. These have done more than what Vogue US tried to do with their "shape" issue to address dressing those who are not short and model skinny or really tall and model skinny (which unfortunately seems to be their definition of "shape").

The body shape language has gone wonkers as your 1,000+ comments have shown. I don't know, I've never considered "curvy" to be a bad word, but rather incredibly complimentary and flattering because as you noted, it's not an indication of weight, but a description of a shape, and I don't know, who wouldn't want to be described as curvy?

Love your work.

Pam

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:14 PM) :

why are we praising you so much for posting marginally curvier women? a wide range of body types should be the norm! slightly curvy women are a minimal venture into body shape equality!

I question whether women who work for a living (in something other than fashion) would wear them.

Beautiful shot. Again though, this woman is hardly "sturdy" and she's barely even curvy. She certainly isn't in need of any type of shoe to "balance her figure out". Scott, have you heard of the singer Beth Ditto? I think that would be a better definition of a sturdy, curvy woman. She's wildly stylish too. Great shot! I love the heavy boots grounding the outfit. Now I'm thinking, "is this one of the curvy girls Scott was talking about?"
In any case, it's a great outfit and lovely shot!

This is Tippi Hedren in Hitchcock's The Birds, meets goth, meets high fashion. Glorious backdrop of otherwise icky birds :)

Love the bird shot. Wonderful work. Kudos!
Eveline has a very distinct look and I have to congratulate you for always posting people from all races, sizes and backgrounds in your blog. You are an inspiration to us all.

That lovely soft line, gently accentuating the point where the trench coat opens is a very subtle punctuation for a coat that thrives on minimalism. Great boots for her and her coat.

Thank you for your site. I have never commented before, but I want to tell you I really appreciate your observant eye on the street. So many great people with a wonderful sense of the visual.

Blogger AtomikBomb said ... (8:40 PM) :

She's definitely rocking this look. The boots complete her legs and the mid-length sleeves combined with the gloves give her a very dramatic look. The severe hair and the birds just add the final touch that makes you say : "I want to kick ass like her!"

Great shot as usual, love the contrast between whitish legs and the black. Chunky shoes seem to be in big time. We are just approaching the winter months here so will be interesting to see if the chunky shoes make a hit in S.A this season.

Sart, you said that:

"Tomorrow I'll post an image of a different young lady I met in Paris with a similarly curvy body type but a different method of creating body harmony."

That was before everyone worked themselves over a needless tizzy over "curvy" and "sturdy".

I wrote in as one of the many to say that I still wasn't offended after re-reading your post close to 10 times; Angelika herself said that she was fine with your description of her. On her blog.

Now, with that out of the way - how does this lady create body harmony in her own way? Your comments please, Sart. For those of us who are not prone to hysterics......

This might possibly be one of the most amazing photos you've ever taken. It almost doesn't even look real with the birds behind her. My first thought was the movie "Inception."

I just love these rap around shoes, but I don´t know wich brand they are, can anybody hepl me with this? mercedes-artenciel.blogspot.com

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:49 AM) :

For both this picture and the two previous shots of a pretty blogger with a similar figure: the super chunky shoes make sense for me, visually, in a way that they just don't on super thin women. I see a harmony here, but on thin legs those same shoes can look more like cloven hooves and distract. Now I might try a wedge or very chunky heel, love the proportion.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:02 AM) :

As the owner of "sturdy" legs, I feel I have to thank you. My legs have caused me a lot of pain, can you believe it? Try growing up in a country where muscular women are nowhere to be seen. But, hey, I look like this woman! Good posture, a fierce look, sharp cheekbones and yes, those sturdy legs.

Blogger spellbnd3 said ... (7:10 AM) :

Phenomenal capture. The strength of the black framed by the lightness with the doves flying. She's perfect and not too overdone.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:42 AM) :

I do not, and will never, think it's "hysterical" or "over/hyper-sensitive" to take issue with a fashion blog using language that is symptomatic of a culture that glorifies one specific body type to the specific and intentional detriment of the rest.

That being said, thanks for taking our comments into consideration before posting. Beautiful photo.

The lengths we go to to be taller. It's true, taller feels good, powerful, but these boots call up images of Frankenstein.
